I put all the junk mail in a bag and then spill tomato juice and stale beer on it. Quicker than shredding and if someone wants to sift through it to find personal info (they're more likely to find one of Kate Murray's flyers), they will have their work cut out for them.
I've heard of mixing it with used kitty litter or after cleaning up after the dogs as well
Another way to avoid identity theft through paper ...
... is to go paperless and get all your statements via email. That's what I do. It's very easy. LIPA does it, National Grid does it, banks do it, etc. No shredding necessary!

The only problem with that is my identity was compromised via the computer. Criminals are very sophisticated these days. These hackers steal people's accounts by using malicious software. Be more worried about hackers than garbage collectors
I don't think I'm important, and no we don't have HIGHLY CLASSIFIED documents, but i did have someone steal my wallet and used my credit and debit card years ago. she also had my SSN, but didn't use it thank god! It's not fun!! Yes, it is a little different than someone going through your garbage and stealing documents to steal your identity.........but we still shred everything and will continue to do so! When it happens to you, you will shred everything also
Shred your wallet while you're at it. This way it'll never happen again.
