I just saw a bus with one passenger. Having busses in Suffolk County is a dumb waste of money. This is suburbia and everyone knows public transportation (In it's current form) just doesn't work in suburbia. But keep throwing money at it.
I say good riddance.
Nassau is a lot different than out in the sticks of Suffolk County.
How much of the revenue does the LIRR and MetroNorth commuters and the MTA subways and buses get from the riders?
LI Bus is on the ropes and everyone is screaming for the riders to pay the most, yet it's okay for the commuters on the 4 types of mass transit above to get most of their funding from our tax dollars.
I'm not sure of the breakdown for each service, but overall MTA runs $13.8 Billion in expenses and collects only $6 billion in revenues (services), 43%. The amount of people that use LIBS in Nassau County is probably around 10% of the residents here. I would estimate LIRR runs around 50% revenue/expenses, with much higher usage in every county vs bus service.
MTA wants us to eventually pay about $40 Million of the cost toward LIBS, up from $10 Million today, for a service that 9 out of 10 people in Nassau don't use.

It's reported everywhere that there are about 100k riders a day. Not sure if that is including round-trip.. which would be ~50k (3.8% of residents) riders.
10% is a high estimate actually. 5%-10% of Nassau County residents use LI Bus is a reasonable ball park, no? I think in some towns it's much lower than 5%, judging by the empty buses.

I'd be willing to wager it's more like 20%, and nearly 50% in towns like Westbury and Hempstead.
In addition a great deal of New Hyde Park and Herricks residents use the N22 and N24 to the subway instead of taking the LIRR.
This is gonna be quick because I've gotta run - but I wanted to get a reply in here before this thread got knocked off the first page and out of my memory entirely, since I'll have a lot more to add later on...

JIW, this is one of the few topics on which I agree with you. While the MTA surely has waste that can be cut, I'm already tired of the recent crop of slash-hungry conservatives gutting programs that primarily benefit the poor while freezing tax hikes on the wealthy and corporations or in some cases cutting their taxes even further. The benefits of public transport are well documented and it's a shame that crab mentality has taken hold in this country, sabotaging its future as well as the future of all of the social safety nets this country spent the last 60 years building. Jay Gould once said, "I can hire one-half of the working class to kill the other half" and that's never been more true.
I agree with JIW on this one too, at least - I agree it's horrible that Nassau's public transportation infrastructure is going to be significantly dismantled. Once things like this disappear, they never come back... and that is a real travesty.
I don't think Mangano (who has been on my s-list since all the NIFA theatrics went down) is the bad guy here, though. For that matter, I don't really think the MTA is in this instance either. As far as LI Bus goes, it would appear the MTA has actually done a fairly decent job keeping costs in line since LIB was consolidated. When I have a little more time, I'll go dig up the NTDB accounting sheets Pequaman linked to in that other post - but if I'm remembering correctly the non-salary LIB operating costs had actually decreased slightly since the "regional bus" system was put in place.
The biggest challenge for both the MTA and Mangano is that there are only so many costs they can actually control... and as we're seeing all over New York State right now, when your largest budget expenditures are salaries and benefits that legally cannot be touched, everyone else suffers and more often than not - it's the "little guy" who feels it the most.
One thing I do wonder, and which was discussed in that other thread, is how exactly will privatizing the remaining bus lines be cheaper when privatizing means Nassau County will lose the entire state subsidy - currently the largest portion of funding for LIB by far?? Something doesn't appear to add up there, though I haven't watched that video yet or looked into it at all.
get an education, so you can get a job to give you $$ so you can buy a car so that you don't have to rely on the bus.
wow
sometimes i feel like Albert Einstein after reading some of these posts.
And so you'd have at least 10,000 more cars on the road everyday, and the roads are already maxed out. Then you'll be upset because all the roads are jammed and it takes 30 minutes to go 1 mile.
Even Einstein would see there's no room for more cars and public transit must be expanded, not cut.
Dont complain when you have to wait 30 minutes on line because all the clerks who take the bus couldn't get to work because there's no buses.
I'm always amazed at the amount of ignorance that exists on this fish shaped sandbar...
24hr I am not sure, but taking a quick look at their routes they do have many that run every 30 minutes during rush hours; HRT is cheaper to ride too, and most likely a real 30 minutes -- not 50 minutes (20 minutes late), where you can beat the bus walking in many cases like erratic LI Bus.
You can attest to the shoddy performance of LIBS, I remember someone making a video where they beat the bus to greenvale?
NOT EVEN CLOSE MTA has a few routes that are unreliable like N22 BUT THE MAJORITY ARE ON TIME!!!!! AND ARE TIMED WITH THE LIRR. The buses are not slow which bus rte do you know that is so slow you can beat it on foot. Try the N70 N6 and the north south ones they are very reliable!!!! N6 is even every 10 minutes!!!! N27 however might be the bad bus ur speaking of ehh?? the 22 and 27 are the exceptions to the meet the LIRR I admit those 2 rtes suck but the rest will leave ya in the dust if you even try and chase it!!!! O and for an example of how SELFISH NYC ppl ARE A NYC bus operator said this"
Common sense, if I live in NYC, I pay taxes to subsidize transportation in NYC. Why should I or anyone for that matter pay for transportation in another county." This was quoted proving some of their ignorance HAVE YA TRIED SCT They SUCK HARDCORE!!!!!!! Not LI Bus there is a trick to it. The N27 was the greenvale bus mentioned right?? this is MTA LI bus's service area http://mta.info/libus/mapnassaubus.pdf (broken link)

AGREED I LIVE IN BROOKLYN YET THIS MAKES me want to CRY!!!! You are very right and the greenvale bus that was slow was N27 which is the least reliable LIB rte from what I heard!!! The rest are nowhere near as slow as that N27 even the N6 is faster without going limited stop!!!!

Moderator cut: language removed The MTA if their rush hour service was better geared toward LIRR more ppl will use it!!!
