I would like to hear opinions about neighborhoods in Setuaket that are great for kids. We would be looking for neighborhoods with single family homes in the $600-700k range, have lots of kids and are friendly. Also, are there any neighborhoods with pools?

Yup.

I like South Setauket Park.
It stayed pretty right sized over the years.

Aged well. Good people

If you need bragging rights you could check Island Estates E. Setauket but your right by the critter section.

Default A map of the Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County

Concomitant with the 1980 Federal census, the Hamlet of East Setauket, the Hamlet of Setauket and the Hamlet of South Setauket were combined to form the unified Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket.

A map of the Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County:

The Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket has a different border than does the "East Setauket, NY 11733" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have an "East Setauket, NY 11733" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket and a place can have other than an "East Setauket, NY 11733" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket): places that have an "East Setauket, NY 11733" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket are in the Village of Poquott, the Village of Old Field and the Hamlet of Port Jefferson Station; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket with a "Stony Brook, NY 11790", "Port Jefferson, NY 11777" and "Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776" mailing address.

There are no community pools to speak of. Either you have a pool in your yard, you have friends with a pool in their yard, or you head over to West Meadow beach.

$600-$700K will get you a house with a pool.

If you are looking for a kid friendly neighborhood, your best bet would be the S Section in Stony Brook which is off Nicolls Rd just north of 347. One of my friends moved in there a few years ago and she is very happy with her choice for her family. She likens it to Mayberry.

Setauket has a lot of great areas and with your budget you could look into Old Field South or Poquott if you want to go to the high end; or look into the area which Crookhaven suggested if you wish to spend less and save some money. It really depends on what your needs and wishes are, as well as the type of 'look' you prefer in a neighborhood.

Most children in the Three Village area 'disappear' come summer. They're in day camp, sleep away camp, band programs, sports programs, etc. The one down side is that there aren't a lot of children just out running about. I've been here over 15 years and it is still alien to me, having grown up in an area where you went and called for friends and within minutes had some sort of outdoor fun going on.

There are some of us who believe in children having a normal, fun summer, so there are kids around to play with, just not herds of them.

Nice blanket statement.
You're not from Setauket, are you?

Thanks for all of the posts, it is very helpful. I have some additional questions: 1) Are there other communities in the Three Villages district, besides Setauket, that have community pools or neighborhood pools? If not, are there membership pools that are reasonably priced? I would NOT want a country club feel. 2) Which of the communities in the Three Villages district has the best every day shopping-grocery stores, Target, etc? We prefer to live in our zipcode and not drive long distances or deal with too much traffic.

I grew up, during the summers in Strongs Neck & if ever there were an edenic place to live, that was it. Acres and acres of unspoiled land for forts and tree houses . We could ride our bikes to the library and to town and take the boat to Port Jeff Village. Even thinking about it makes me so nostalgic that I could cry for the Long Island we lost.

For those who may not be familiar with Strongs Neck, it is a peninsula (neck) in the northern part of Setauket-East Setauket.
