I spent alot of time in LB during my younger days but I never got into a bar when was under 21, although alot of the nightlife pushed their age requirement to 23 during that time.
It's been years since I gone there in the summer, but from what I remember it was hell trying to find a parking spot, muscleheads and italian princesses all over, prices are outrageous for everything, and even the more easy-going places had some fights now and then. I can't imagine what it would be like to be a full time resident in LB, especially on the west end. Bottom line: great place to visit (in your single 20's) but you wouldn't want to live there.

Anyone concerned about the price of getting on the beach at Long Beach should just go west to the boardwalk over by Rockaway Park/Rockaway Beach area. Same exact Ocean. No fees for parking or getting on the beach AFAIK.

I lived on E Market so I can't comment on the West End beach, I only took LB Blvd straight down. Disaster area.

Yeah, that is right near the "main" area

yep definitely. I will be the first to admit, my views ARE pretty biased, but YMMV with ANY area. I can see SOME benefit to LB, but the problems (to me, at least) outweigh any benefit.

Long Beach is just a pain in the ass to both drive to and around and taking the LIRR b/c I can live somewhere like Babylon or Huntington and have the same length of train ride as I would from Long Beach. It's so out of the way and the worst is if you need to get on the southern state going west. Your options are go east to go west via the meadowbrook OR take Long Beach Rd up to Peninsula or Corona Ave or something which takes freakin' forever.

And on the flip side, you will post nothing but glorious things about the wonderful city of Long Beach.

I lived in LB, and I currently work in LB, and I am typing this post in LB right now.

I do not like it.

The summers are horrible. There is no parking during the day. It is like being in Times Square on a Sunday surrounded by tourist buses.
The winters are horrible. The city does not know how to operate snow plows except on major roads.
The stores are not great. Nothing you can't get anywhere else.
The east end is not great. Overpriced houses that barely fit a family.
The west end is bad. Small houses with a large amount of bars serving underage kids from the area.
I do not have kids so I cannot comment on the schools.
The beach is not good. They charge you a CRAZY amount of money to access a beach. $12-$15 for non-resident-pass holders.
Since LB is so close to the water, the roads flood easily.
In the event of something going wrong, there are realistically only 3 small roads to take out of the island: Atlantic Beach bridge ($2.00), Long Beach bridge or the Loop Parkway. Good luck if an actual disaster hits.

I guess it's good if you like those dopey cruiser bicycles, or if you like getting said bicycle stolen out from under you.
OMG I know someone who sold a bungalow in the west end for $735...ridiculous. What are you even paying for?

And hilarious about the bar comment serving underage b/c it's so true. I went to Minnesota's once when I was 26 and the bouncer called me grandma. Needless to say he was right, I was the oldest person in there.

you're paying for on-street parking and a legal 2family 1br-per-apt house.
