They do. Try Arlington or Alexandria. Fairfax, meh. Loudoun forget. Talk about poorly planned, so if you're there, yeah, you're in vapid vanilla land.

Babylon and West Islip are nice. There are nice places on LI, sure, particularly the beaches and the parks. What I particularly like about Long Island isn't the beach, though. It's the trees and tree-lined streets. Well, for three seasons of the year, at least. Winters here kind of suck if there isn't fresh snow on the ground to pretty things up. Way too gray and dismal.

Still, don't overlook what you have, because the Commonwealth is downright beautiful once you get away from the bland subdevelopments where the streets are named after all the trees they cut down. (Asheville, Reston, Sterling, I'm looking at you, ya bastions of tree butchery.)

I know arlington and Alex quite well, I lived in NW Alex for 10 years. Actually, Alex City has plenty of poorly planned areas as well - Landmark, and even some of the parts near Bradlee. Its not all Old Town, by any means. Even Arlington, though it has both some older walkable areas, and some good new planning (Like around the orange line metro stops, and Shirlington) isn't quite the sequence of little walkable towns you find in parts (at least) of LI.

As for the difficult economics of LI, I can't really comment on that. I am only speaking as a sometime visitor.

BTW, I am not actually an expat LIer (if LI is used in the narrow sense of Nassau and Suffolk). I grew up in Brooklyn, and never lived in Nassau or Suffolk.

So great reading your upbeat report! I'm glad you had a wonderful visit. I think I, too, would miss some of the things you mentioned if I moved away. Fire Island, the scenic small towns and historic areas, and the beaches everywhere -- each with its own atmosphere and feel.

I hate it here, but if I was from outside I could see myself loving to visit here.
As I say to my employees who complain about work... the door is always open.

...many many many like this. Maybe folks should have made a different decison on what they wanted to do in life?

No, I like Brooklyn even better! And of course I have lived in lots of different places since then.
