It's a strange little area over there - I think it's around the intersection of Magnolia and Meadow.
There's a little nabe over there called Franklin Mews that's really nice though. Off the beaten path, most people don't know it's there, even people who've lived in GC their whole lives.
I think the least offensive entry to GC is from Franklin Square (to the south) and Stewart Manor (to the west).
I did a search through google maps street viewer up and down a good chunk of Meadow Street (including the area around Mangolia) and don't see and don't see anything resembling row houses.
Btw, how about the area around Cathedral Ave?? In that area the change between Garden City and Hempstead really isn't that noticeable.

They aren't row houses but that's what they look like. I believe they are attached 2 family homes. They just don't fit in. The point is, Meadow Street never has been and never will be considered a good place to live in GC. You pay a premium for certain streets (ie the numbered streets) and you pay a penalty for others.
Hempstead is not a good or desirable 'hood: no question about it. The worst neighborhoods on LI are not so terrible. It's not like we're bordering a warzone here. The purchase should be considered and weighed with the pros and cons....Great schools, for example. Great neighborhood around you on 3 sides. Do you wanna live your life in fear of burglary? Some do. Some don't.
I don't think it's actually that nice. There's one area where they look like rowhouses out of a slum.
I have seen the rowhouses/townhouses/attached homes. I agree they don't fit with the rest of the homes on street, and may not look/be very desirable to most "slums" they aren't. If this is the worst of Garden City, you're grasping at straws compared to real "slums".

Agreed. I have friends who grew up on Meadow St. and they never complained about being robbed. Burglaries are something you have to work around rather than worry about.
I grew up in the estates section of Garden City, no where near Hempstead. A few months after we moved in our house was burglarized. Everywhere in Garden City seems to be a target for robberies because of its wealth. Many residents in Garden City have security systems installed in their homes because of it. Nevertheless, all of Garden City is extremely safe.
Not going to say I wouldn't buy on Meadow if I really wanted GC schools, but I wouldn't overpay.
I assume the OP is looking at 121 Meadow Street. Ask is $659,000 North side of street (better), high ranch (which does not appeal to me).
2 comps to look at;
97 Garden Street - Same "longitude" ie distance East of Country Life LIRR station, similar in size, possibly more charming, safe distance from Hempstead border, sold for $565,000 last summer.
80 Meadow Street - smaller though more charming and seems nicely updated though older. South side of Meadow ie back lot line is border with Hempstead and abuts both commercial and residential therein. Sold last summer for $565,000 to my surprise/chagin.
I have no way to accurately adjust for updates/improvements/true condition of these houses, but if buying in to the GC School district as cheap as possible were my goal, I would look at Meadow, but I cant see paying above something in the high 4s for most houses because of the resale and crime issues previously mentioned. Clearly motion lights in the yard and alarms would be needed.
Right price for 121 Meadow (for me) is low $5s, but I'm probably wrong based on 80.
I have read a few threads in regards to living in Garden City, but my wife and I would like to specifically ask residents about their experiences living on Meadow Street. My wife and I are planning to bid on a property on Meadow Street (backyard towards Willow St) but we are really concerned with the proximity to Hempstead. Is Meadow Street safe? How badly does it affect resale value? Any other thoughts about Meadow Street?
Thanks so much!
You should be concerned about it. I personally wouldn't buy a house within burglary range of a bad town. What you should do is take a map of Nassau County, then take a red marker and highlight all the bad towns, then exclude any town that borders them. That's what I did, and wound up buying in Bethpage.

I'm assuming this is sarcasm. The other option is just worrying way too much.....

There was actually a well-publicized burglary spree in Bethpage a few weeks ago. Thats just proof that burglaries happen everywhere; no matter where you buy and how much you spend, burglary will always be a threat.
And the man behind it actually came from Bethpage.
Clinton south of Meadow is hardly a paradise, but the talk of slum housing on Meadow is idiotic. And Hempstead residents commuting from the Country Life Press LIRR station pose a problem? Please. Some people may need to live, work and shop in gated communities to keep their blood pressure under control.
