OK I need help. I have been told I need to replace my 4 year old unit with a new one to the tune of $7400 installed. I am retired living on social security and this is a huge financial blow. I was told there was a leak in the system that they could not fix. They put in 4 lbs of Freon. They said they possibly could replace coils for $3000 but I might as well replace whole unit. Home is 1200 sf.
Two questions, could I try to find someone that could find the leak and repair it for a reasonable price or do I need to suck it up and replace unit?
Are Freon units being phased out and what is the replacement? I don't want to purchase something that will be obsolete in a couple of years.
Thanks for any suggestions.
PS one more thing ... is it better to go with a smaller independent company or one of the bigger ones that advertise all the time.
Freon units are going, going, gone.
The guy who does our furnace and a/c told me if it goes in the next few years, he would never use a freon because the change is coming very fast. (my unit is from 2000 and going strong. I just asked him about it last summer)

Yep from 2010 on they are no longer able to sell AC units charged with freon (R22), (although they can be charged after install and still make them). After 2020 freon will no longer be produced but recycled freon can still be used which will make it expensive if you need a freon charge after that date.

The older units that use Freon R-22 will not be able to get recharged anymore, the gas will no longer be produce. I believe 2020 is the date that production stops.
New a/c units use R-410A commonly referred to as Puron so when a unit needs servicing/recharging they are pushing people to replace the equipment to the new refrigerant.

Not entirely true. Although they won't make R-22 anymore you will still be able to get recharged with recycled stuff. It will just be a lot more expensive
