It's the same as defending against the conception that all New Yorkers are Joey Buttafuoco. If you actually lived somewhere that you had to go 10 miles for a gallon of milk (riding your cow) then fine, tell us where that is, and I'm sure you are happy you're back (and I don't mean "you" specifically, but in the general sense, KWIM?).

As far as the idea that we all want to come back....not even for a visit. Sorry. That comment is right up there with "your'e just jealous you aren't a cop/teacher" and things of that ilk. Just a silly statement that makes no sense at all.
My sister moved to NC, and I've visited her MANY times. It's about 20 minute drive to a supermarket. THere is a convenience store nearby for milk, but that's it. There's a "miss me yet" Bush poster in practically every place we go. Lots of Bible thumpers, too. She loves it because she has a big place with horses, but her husband was transferred there along with his NY salary, so they're doing OK. It is nice where she is, but very hot and dry. I could live in NC, but only if I were near the coast. I stay here because I LOVE the water. And to address another poster, my quality of life is fine. I live on the NOrth Fork and I love it here. There are plenty of houses in the 200 and 300,000s. Even some under that, if you want to live in town. But they are small and need work.

The problem with your comparison to NC is that you treat LI like it's a state... I mean we know you're not the only one. Granted the metros aren't as large as the city, but I can stick you in nowheresville Upstate NY and you'll ride 20 min for milk, complain it's too cold, and not be near the water you love.

The point is that you can't generalize states to the degree you do here when comparing to LI. It may feel like the boonies in certain parts of the East End, but come on. heh

It's going to matter where specifically in any state you choose to live.

Hot and dry? In North Carolina? I'll give you hot but I've yet to find a spot away from the coast where the air is anything but humid.

And there are plenty of decent homes for sale in the sub-$300k range? First of all you're talking the North Fork which is convenient only to, well, the North Fork (heaven help anyone living there and working in Western Suffolk or points further west). And I don't know that a North Forker can pitch convenience to retail and services unless you live further in towards Riverhead and I know of no one who would want to call Riverhead home.

And one more thing, there are plenty of decent homes for sale in the sub-$300k range?

Default One more thing...

Houses with some updates that have been well maintained in good school districts. For a family making 120+ it is doable. Of course if you are making less than that, than anything decent still seems out of reach or a major stretch.
One more thing...

When I bought my first house in 1997 my gross annual income was about $100K. We loved a house that was for sale in Fort Salonga that was on nearly three acres, was easily bigger than anything we'd ever need and was on a great street for a family with young kids. The property taxes were nearly $11k per year and home heating oil was selling for about $1.39 per gallon. However the price was a whopping $339K and we knew we could never make the numbers work with our meager down payment of $10K.

Now those numbers are considered conservative and acceptable? How detached from reality have we become?

Yes, I'm sorry, it is humid there! I must have been thinking of the distance from the water.

I live in Aquebogue. The homes in the under 300K range are in Calverton, Riverhead, Baiting Hollow, I know there are many places you may not want to live but first time home buyers aren't as choosy.

If you're OK with Riverhead schools, then sure - you can find under 300k... you can find 300k in other similar school districts.

Aquebogue is a nice little town, but kids grow up and go to High School eventually.

C'mon Mikey

The average Long Islander couldn't survive outside of it's borders in the free world.
New York has it's people so fully dependant on its welfare and socialistic big brother teet it's hard for them to wean themselves. And as a side bar their unrealistic belief that they are ahead of the curve when they are actually behind makes them not only unpopular but the butt of all jokes.

Riverhead high school has more students in advanced placement than many other schools. Of course the building is a disgrace, but you can blame that on the school boards, who cut maintenance from every budget every year for the past 30 years so they'd pass---and the teachers could still get their raises and bennies.

I don't get it. You travel to Florida, NC, Arizona, etc. and all you find are Long Islanders. They'll live in another state for 10 years and they'll still say they're from Long Island. They're not struggling to survive outside of NY. I have no idea what you're talking about... Do you?
