Hi, I'm vacating to NYC during 28th june - 10th july and would appreciate any good suggestions for some decent non surf/swim centred beaches.
I'm staying in Bayonne, NJ and I'm using public transport to travel (no taxis), so beaches closer to my abode, will be preferred.
Thank you
If you want guaranteed, completely non-surf beaches, most of the ocean beaches are not an option unless you happen to go on a day with no swell (not common in summer).
This may help a bit...check it the morning before you go to get an idea of what the surf conditions will be like...

I'm not too sure about what the swimming is like in the back bays of Nassau...but there are nice protected spots inside Fire Island.

Are you looking to sunbathe? Most of the beaches have a combo of people swimming and people sunbathing. (By surf do you mean actual surfing, or wanting to stay away from a beach with large waves?)
Are you looking for lots of people watching or something more quiet?
Firstly, I'm also going solo lol
and secondly, I can't swim/surf, so it would be a waste for me to go somewhere where these activities take centre stage
From Bayonne, take the light rail to Hoboken, transfer to the PATH train, get off at 33rd street and walk one block over to Penn Station to catch the LIRR.
Choose one of the following beach packages: MTA LIRR - Beach Getaways 2011 (http://www.mta.info/lirr/getaways/Beach2011/ - broken link)
Personally, I would avoid Jones, Long Beach, and Robert Moses. Too congested, especially on the weekends.
If I were you, I would check out some of the beaches on Fire Island. The package includes a nice ferry ride over the Great South Bay. Avoid Cherry Grove and the Pines, big gay vacation destination (unless you are into that kind of thing). Personally, I would check out the Sunken Forest. You get off the ferry at Sunken Forest, there is a nice nature walk through the forest, and you pop out at the beach where you picnic and sit on the beach. Watch Hill is also nice. Good luck. Most of the beaches have sunbathers and swimmers. Some have surfing.
Your best bet would be to focus on the NJ beaches which have a boardwalk and some amusements/restaurants/entertainment.
The beaches immediately around NYC (Coney Island, etc.) are typically full of people and the experience could be somewhat urban.
If you want a more peaceful and natural experience, follow up on the Sunken Forest, Fire Island Suggestion.
