It is generally things like cars, boats, atv's, jetskis, snowmobiles etc. In SC they limit the sales tax on car sales to $300 and then hit you on the personal property tax. It is prorated for the year & amount of mileage on the vehicle. So the newer the car or more mileage you put on a car, the higher the tax will be.

Thanks Sammie. Can you explain this Personal Property tax a little better to me? What exactly does it include or entail? Is it just for the auto or would it include things like TV's and computers and any other electronics? I have heard of a few states that have this tax but I have no idea of how it works. Any insight would be appreciated.
This is from the Alabama tax website:

Class Description Assessment Percent

I
All property of utilities used in the business of such utilities 30%
II All property not otherwise classified 20%
III All agricultural, forest and single family, owner occupied residential property, including owner occupied residential manufactured homes located on land owned by the manufactured home owner, and historic buildings and sites 10%
IV All private passenger automobiles and motor trucks of the type commonly known as "pickups" or "pickup trucks" owned and operated by an individual for personal or private use and not for hire, rent, or compensation 15%

All property not otherwise classified would mean almost any property except there are exemptions. Such as, anything used in the household (ex: furniture, computers, etc.) or on the property (ex: lawn mower, etc.) are exempted from the personal property tax.

I'm not all not up on these taxes as we just recently moved to Alabama but I do know we have not paid any high taxes.

I was also thinking about Columbia SC. Anybody familiar with that area?
Yes my niece lived in Columbia. It has a nice zoo, plenty of shopping options and is home to the university of south carolina. It's a nice area that portrays the real south, it's a little gritty, even has a neon sugar sign and a deep southern drawl. It's the south which is fine, I left New York and now live in the Charlottesville Va. area.

Be warned about Columbia however it gets very hot in the summer, they brag about how hot it gets there. My long time friend from New York now lives in Fort Mill South Carolina, she said she couldn't wait to get the hell out of New York. She's really happy there, may be worth a look, I stopped by for a visit a few years ago, I thought it was nice as well.
