Do not be surprised if there are more parochial schools closing. This is a result of obviously the economy but also the fact that the diocese is basically ignoring the parents complaints about certain schools.

I had an issue with one school and wrote and contacted the diocese four times in November. No reply at all. This June I decided again to write to the person who seemingly is in charge of education for the diocese. It took her over a week to reply with a message ; basically saying that she was going out of town for a few days so it would be hard to contact her and also saying that my issue was more of a school issue and not the diocese issue and to take it up with the principal.. One of the issues was that there was at least 8 kids out of my childs class not returning because of the actions and attitude of the principal. So why should I go to the principal with this.

The diocese is only interested in your checks and not at all interested in the education of the children or their welfare. This is a common problem for what used to be an excellent education, they are failing the children.

Between my two childrens classes, there are at least 15 children leaving this year. Many are going to other parochial schools.

Just FYI. When it is blasted in Newsday about other schools closing ; its the dioceses fault along with the economy for not being there when they are needed. But then they have been doing this forever so why change now.

You've been complaining about parachoial schools for quite some time. Wasn't it your son who broke the sink in his school?

I suspect they are tired of responding to you. I suggest you take your kids and enroll them in public schools. Im sure the admins at the public school will most certainly call you back....

And then, when the kids become so unruly that they can't get along with the rest of the school kids, they will home-school them.

Missing the point. Yes, my son broke the sink ; that has been dealt with.

My point to go back to is that the schools will be closing because of the lack of cooperation from the diocese ; its not just me ; its many many other parents also saying the same thing. No callbacks, diocese does not want to know at all. My sons never had an issue at all under the old princpal ; never ever.

Or maybe lack of qualified people to take the job. Public school is definately an option at this stage and I am sure they would do fine in them.

Sorry 'bout the dig, the "home schooled by the district" thing is a pet peeve. A kid I know went through that, all because he couldn't control himself. He started out in private (Catholic) school, too.

I have yet to meet any person who has been through private school that is a stellar achiever when compared to public-schooled people.

I also believe that kids need to be exposed to the "real world" instead of the microcosm that is private school (or at least, seems to be), but that's another matter.

The only way the diocese will ever change is if enough people pull their kids out and they begin to wonder why. But I suspect it'll be like them blaming clergy pedophilia on the 60's. They just won't get it.

Apology accepted. The kids are fine really ; they are exposed to many things including traveling outside the country many times. I dont really want to micromanage the kids ; just would like them in a school that focus's more on education and learning and less on the sports, outside activities etc.
I agree with what you say about the diocese ; they will get it when its too late and they have alienated way to many good people .

Don't the Catholic HS (as well as other private schools) have sports teams and do extracurriculars outside of school, i.e. Community service, etc.?

Do you feel the loss of students at the elementary level will be felt at the HS level? Although it was over 30 years ago, I recall public elementary school friends leaving after jr hs to attend Holy Trinity, Holy Family & Chaminade.

They have very small teams and this year it was a disaster. Two of the schools forfeited the games. I dont think it was very sportsmanly to forfeit a game at all. But what do I know? I dont know if it will be felt at high school level yet, but that will come too I pressume. Also many of the kids I am talking about are in either 4th or 5th grade so there is nowhere else for them to go as most of the high schools start in 9th grade except for Mercy in Riverhead that starts in 7th grade. In one grade there are a total of 42 kids, 8 of who are leaving. Thats 20%. In another grade there are at least 4 leaving out of 38. Many of these kids have siblings also either in upper grades or lower grades.

Its a shame really.
