Fear of Apartments in Farmingdale Unwarranted | Mobilizing the Region

So Long Islanders want there island to fall further behind in the smart growth dept ,i guess they want more traffic congestion. Smart Growth has done well in New Jersey and Westchester in mostly suburban areas...

A few people squawk about one project on a 120+ mile island so you label all of us NIMBYs?

The only thing I see wrong with the project is lack of parking.

The opposition is ridiculous, considering there are already a number of apartment houses on Hempstead Tpke as one heads east into Farmingdale.

This sort of stuff is a great idea but it should have been built years ago. Now we have a glut of homes on the market, hardly see the need for more development.

We have a glut of homes, but they are still too costly for young people starting out. The project would be great economically between construction jobs, revitalizing the downtown and creating an affordable environment for young people starting out.

It would be great to see this come to fruition.

Why doesn't all new construction take parking into account and add several levels of underground lots to each new building? Nassau is going to be like Queens soon enough. Forward thinking might prevent the parking problems they have there.

TOD projects have less parking , the people who would move here would not be car users more likely to be Transit users. This program started to in Suburban Jersey back in the 80s and now we have a strong suburban bus ridership which is 1.1 Million strong and growing when you factor in private and public bus companies.... Our Rail Ridership was only 140,000 back in the early 90s , mainly due to the wild sprawl we had and lack of housing around the stations and now that there is a decent amount of dense housing and towns are more walkable ridership is now 300,000. These types of projects take into account the lack of parking and focus on the walkablity.... Which reduces the need for cars ,and beleave there's a south Farmingdale station proposed....along with 2 More Larger projects like this on LI. Some of the Larger TOD projects over the next 2 decades will take place in White Plains , Port Chester , Stamford , Norwalk , Teterboro,NJ , Yonkers , Secaucus , Harrison , East Orange , Bridgeport , New Haven , Elizabeth , Hackensack Waterfront of Jersey City , Canal Crossing of Jersey City , Backside of Hoboken , Hunts Point in the Bronx and Paterson these developments will range in size from a few acres to up to 6SQ miles with a few Developments. Some are underway in Phases like in Harrison,NJ , Stamford and White Plains.

We have very inadequate public transport -- look what recently occurred with LI Bus. The LIRR station right there is great, but the buses are key for going everywhere else.

A number of the locations you mention are blighted and in need of revitalization; Farmingdale is in a different league which is why some people may be opposing this project.

I would like to see this project happen. Our downtowns can really use a boost like this.

Hopefully, if enough TOD is built on Long Island, there will be more ridership on the bus system, which will justify keeping the service at a decent level (since the TOD is built around train stations, the station itself plus the housing units makes for a good feeder point for the buses)

If the Main Line's third track project comes to fruition, maybe Mineola and Hicksville can see some more TOD.

You're right, though. I would assume that most of the people would use the LIRR to commute to work, but in order to lead a car-free life, there would have to be decent bus service for day-to-day activities.
