That is a fair and accurate appraisal.

Definition of a consultant: An individual who will use your wristwatch to tell you what time it is ... for an exorbitant amount of money.

If you consult for government, we, the taxpayers certainly do pay your keep. And if you don't consult for the government, then your keep is included in the cost of goods and services that we pay for. It's all one big circle.

Your glass is perpetually half-empty, Clamboy. You need a new song and dance. Get over yourself and grow up.

Which is quite likely a large part of what the various townships on LI had in mind, back in the day, when they put all those single-family zoning regs in place to discourage "transient" (i.e., rental) populations.

You can't have your cake (lower crime rates) and eat it too (a plentiful supply of "affordable" rental housing).

We've obviously hit a nerve.

I'll try the high road on this one.

Unfortunately, you don't know where the high road is.

Thank you for that vote of confidence. Long Island is an expensive place to live, but for many reasons ... some good, some bad. Housing is expensive because it is a desirable place to live. If people didn't want to live here, do you think the median home price would be well above 400,000 dollars? It's all about supply and demand. Are taxes high? Yes, they are (and in many cases, too high.) But along with that goes a plethora of services not found in other parts of the country. And the largest bite of our taxes is for schools. While some may argue that we're not getting the bang for the buck we should be, schools on Long Island are uniformly good (you have to hunt for the bad ones). Compare that to other areas of the country where you have to hunt for the good ones. The biggest issue in the cost of schools is that we have, and continue to demand, local control of our schools. That's why Nassau has 56 separate districts. How many of you would want to deal with a county or town-wide school district?

There are always two sides to every coin ... and pros and cons about every place we live. In the end, it's up to the individual to decide what's truly important to him or her.
What would be the plethora of services not available in other parts of the country? In view it is services that are available in other parts of the country at a much more reasonable price.

Schools are the same deal. Part of the reason for the high cost of schools on LI is because that each town is pitted against one and other. Duplication of services and not taking advantage of the economies of scale is killing the home owners. So one the one hand they can brag about how superior they **think** their district is, then on the other they complain about the costs. Plenty of other places in the country have one district and have just as good a reputation and just as high or higher scores.

And for those who say that people should struggle to get their house, why? If you can go somewhere else and get a decent house or condo at an affordable price, why put yourself through the struggle of living on LI? So you can say that you live there? In the end, that and $2 will get you on the subway.

Long Island Libararies are a perfect example...does every town need a mega-library to outdo the one in the next town less than 10 minutes away??? Why don't they consolidate and cut taxes spent for the libraries across the communities that are affected by such a consolidation.

Especially in the day of home pc's and the internet...who the heck needs a mega-library anymore??????
