I grew up and work on Long Island, currently renting a place for the summer in Long Beach, but moving back home come fall. I'm in my mid twenties and would love to start looking for a place in the tri-state area that is great for twenty-something's all year round (restaurants, bars, movies, bowling, dog parks, etc). Long Beach is fun for the summer, but once winter hits, it's a ghost town, plus all the other areas that are "cool" are now overly populated like Astoria,Williamsburg, and Hoboken. Any recommendations on places that are not family/suburbanish, but fun for a twenty-five year old? Open to Long Island, Queen, and even Southern Westchester.

Bayside is a cool spot. Great bars and restaurants.

I would second Bayside and add Rockville Centre to the list.

Take a look at Bay Shore, plenty of good relatively-affordable apartments here and more than enough "nightlife" for your average 20-something.
