I love these disasterists...reminds me of the Y2K nuts...they think they are an island unto themselves.

Forget the rotating food, blah blah blah.....go get a case of MREs and you'll be fine.

OH yeah...all the guns and ammo talk...let's face it..plenty of people with guns and ammo...you aren't Fort Apache.

We've seen road rage, people get into fights while waiting on a line at the store, neighbors fighting over the silliest of things on any given day. Who recalls the looting which followed the black outs? The rioting over a verdict? The rioting over the outcome of a sporting event?

Heaven forbid a huge disaster occur. People will lose whatever shreds of decency remain, entitlement types will expect what is your to be theirs. Police will be stretched thin. Tempers will flare, anxiety at an all time high as needed supplies dwindle.

TV PSAs offer advice on what to do in the event of such disasters.

Planning ahead to be prepared isn't being a disasterist. I'd rather be the ant than the grasshopper any day.

What about the rioting at Walmart a few years back for a couple of cheap TVs where the employee was trampled? There is very little decency left today.

How sad and true. Whatever decency remains will be gone in the event of an emergency. "Me first and eff the rest" mentality will prevail.

I don't remember any "huge disaster" that led to people losing "whatever shreds of decency remain". In fact, I believe the worse the disaster has been in history, the more people were giving and helping each other the best they could.

You mention black-outs, but I made it home to Eastern LI from Hoboken during the big black-out by ferry, walking over the Brooklyn bridge, and eventually catching a ride in Jamaica. I didn't see any looting and I saw people helping each other the entire way home.

What huge disasters have you seen people killing each other for supplies?

We joke about "survivalist" attitudes all the time.. we have the guns, we are not bad shots, we can cook and prepare our own food without having someone else do the work and we are training our dog to track and retrieve... it's a running joke.
