Hi,

I am trying to sell a house in the Town of North Hempstead. We just found out that it has an open permit from 1958 for a sewer connection. What is the process to close the permit? I tried calling the building dept but was put on hold for a while and figured the forum could help before trying to call again.

Thanks,

Do you know if you are connected to a sewer? If so, it is probably just a $35 fee to obtain the certificate. That was what happened to me. very simple

Yes, we're connected to a sewer. Did you have to schedule an inspector to come to your house to close the permit? Or did you just pay at the dept. of buildings?

We simply went to the building dept and paid them the $35 but ours had already been inspected. That may well also be the case with yours. Our entire development was connected in the early '60's and the county did the connection and it was inspected by the TNH back then. Unless you did your connection on your own as a stand alone you probably are fine. FYI. IF it is the $35 fee as I suspect, you may be interested to know that a neighbor sold his parents home in the area last summer and he did not need to get the certificate....it is all about the benjamins!!!

It's so ridiculous that they'd even ask you to 'finish up' something (AKA just pay them some money) that was started 53 years ago. Anyway, at least it doesn't sound like it'll be a big headache for you. The stupidity just blows my mind is all...

Thanks everyone. We ended up paying $35 for the certificate and will get it in two weeks. Atleast it was not too bad.

Glad to read it was painless, but they should have eaten the $35. This is open sine 1958? Were you even alive then?

Nope I was not even born then. Somehow this open permit passed through two house sales (previous owner and us) and also one re-finance title search. Always came back with a clean title. Just our luck when we tried to sell the open permit came up. Painless but still stressful.

I was initially told I had to pay a fee for something similar. It was about the same amount and was for when the prior, prior owners converted from oil to gas - also done before I was born too. Anyway, I had to legalize so much other stuff that it wasn't brought up again. Then again, who knows, they very well could've just lumped the fee in with everything else they charged me. So freaking ridiculous, having to pay a fee for stuff that was done before we were even alive!
