Rockaway Beach may be free, but you sometimes need to get lucky in finding parking. Also, depending on how you get there, you will need to pay a toll. (I heard there's a toll-less way, but I haven't gone that way)
Ha! Free and LI don't go in the same sentence, they'll always find a way to impose a tax. Went to Siesta Key last month. Didn't pay a dime for the beach nor the parking.

It's pretty silly to expect that you deserve a free beach just because you live on an Island. Most of that land is privately owned and for good reason, to protect the shoreline.
I think if you have to pay it should be double what they charge considering they ship the sand in from South Carolina.
