I agree.

My realtor once said, when one of her clients was getting all twisted up over how much they might be able to 'clear' on the house they had up for sale (which was going to be a healthy amount no matter what):

"You need to put things in perspective. What you're stressing about is like the difference between worrying about how to put food on the table, and worrying about what kind of china to serve it on."

(The client was a friend of mine, who passed along the words of wisdom because not only did they make sense but really DID put a stop to the circle-thinking stress cycle.)

Are teachers overpaid here? If it was me, and I had one of these jobs...no...as it stands now, yes, of course.

My sister inlaw is a Music teacher. Music teacher making high 70's. If she went anywhere else. It would be less then 1/2 that.

Pretty good...another 30k and she can afford 3% of the available housing.

How many years of college did it take for her to be broke?

A good Teacher is Priceless. Teachers are paid well in most Long Island districts, but it is more a reflection of the high cost of living here. There are many dedicated and worthy teachers on Long Island and in New York City who are worth every penny and then some.

That being said, don't be taken in by that "I have two Masters Degrees" response. Education is the biggest scam going. Colleges like Hofstra, Adelphi, Dowling, St. Joes are merely diploma mills for students majoring in education. You need not know anything to get a teacher's license, but pass some very easy education courses and the certification exams. There are no real standards as there are in the medical, law or engineering professions. Its more like Chucky Cheeses where everyone is a winner. You would have to be a complete idiot to fail - and even if you are a complete idiot you can retake the tests until you pass. Once you have certification and know the right people or can rely on nepotism you can get a job making $50,000 to eventually $120,000/year teaching the youth of Long Island.

I'll have to admit that I got my Masters + 30 at Post on a few weekends . I'm not sure that they still do that, though. The courses were mostly outside on the lawn even.

Didn't you attend school here on Long Island, nbres ?

That about says it all about the Teaching Colleges.

I wonder if one could get an M.D. license over a few weekends?

Well, it was a while ago and I am aware that it was a huge joke. We all were.

Try Grenada for an instant M.D. if you are interested. That might work. And, they even have a beach !

Look, like I posted earlier, there are many great teachers worth their weight in gold. Those courses are an insult to any intelligent person working in education. Its all bulls%$# and they know it!

Grenada, sounds great, where do I register? I guess I don't have to worry about the communists taking over again.
