Yeah that's what I was thinking... why bother, not like I can just go and switch electric companies
A supervisor is supposed to be calling back but I doubt it with the attitude the woman on the phone had.
Funny, they rush to shut off our power when there are "customers affected" (which, I doubt since everyone on the street had power before the geniuses at LIPA showed up) but they took their sweet time last year or two years ago with the snow storms.
They are a utility. They get away with certain things because of this, like making noise at all hours of the night. There is no getting around it. I would be pissed off but would just deal with it. However, if the techs are hootin' and hollerin' and behaving in an unprofessional or non-courteous manner, well that's a different story. If they are out there working and droppin "f-bombs" back and forth like there's no tomorrow, then you have a legit gripe. Sometimes they will have no option but to be a little noisy with equipment and crap while performing repairs, but they should try to maintain a professional work ethic while out there and be as courteous and non intrusive as possible.
That being said..."F" LIPA. I hate them, they suck, and I'm just tired of their crap. From the prez right down to the techs.
They should all be wearing ski masks. Legal robbery is what that company is, but whatever.

There could have been customers affected, just not on your street. The grids can encompass several blocks, so it's quite possible there were people in your neighborhood that had no power. And in regards to your medical equipment, if you register it with LIPA they make sure you have back up power for your stuff, i.e. they can give you a generator for the duration of their work. It's likely something major needed to be replaced and that is what caused you to lose power.
They're doing it again tonight for around 1 hr between 11am and midnight
We ended up getting a 25$ credit on our bill because of last night but they are cutting power AGAIN.
UGH
It's not even the loss of power, it's the heavy diesel engines running CONSTANTLY, including RIGHT NOW, into the night. It's the yelling back and forth right outside our window. Yes, the loss of power sucks but it's nowhere as bad as the noise. I have the NCPD number ready for tonight if they keep this crap up.
You would do better to go out to eat and a late movie. The NCPD will be no help to you. It's utility and while you may not like it the noise rules may not apply to the work they are doing.
Kind of like complaining that the Fire Dept made to much noise puting out the house fire next door, and then they had to come back the next night cause someone torched it again.

I don't get why they don't do this work at, say, 10pm.. rather than midnight. I am not the only one hearing this noise.

Not the same. One is an emergency the other is not. LIPA may call it "emergency" work," but it is work that could be done at a reasonable hour.

Yes, and no, they often weigh when is the best time to interrupt power, chances are it will affect personal/business customers less at night than say, at noon.
And just how would you propse our utility distribution worked? It's tough to operate a utility in another manner.
Look how well it worked for the phone company. Since the breakup of the Bell System, phone bills have sky-rocketed, many new surcharges have appeared on our bills, service visits are scheduled days later, and oh, if the proplem is the wiring in your home, then its your expense.
Yeah, we can own our own phones, but it's some China piece of garbage that lats maybe two years.

It's not just the short loss of power, it's the noise when most are trying to sleep- and that affects the customers most adversely.
