I'm from the area so my impression of N Bellport is the shoot'em up laundry to stop n shot (Family jokes) Once you get north of Sunrise (And even a few blocks south for that matter) it's a different story. I would consider living in these neighborhoods, sure. To me, Medford, Patchogue, Selden, Centereach, Shirley, Coram, Rocky Point, Ridge, Middle Island, etc, etc, etc are all cut from the same cloth.

OOPS, I mean Sunrise!

I always get Sunrise and LIE confused since it looks so similar out East (except the LIE has an extra lane).

Lol it happens. To me Bellport is out west. I used to live in Manorville so to me out east is anything past Westhampton Beach.

To me, this is a concern. That landfill is enormous and is impacting the entire area.
The smell really hits east of Bellport, btw.

It had been a while, so this brings me up to stink speed.

As for your question, I would probably prefer North Bellport (since i'm a minority) and wouldn't want to feel out of place. But being unbiased, in terms of quality of life, it'll probably be better in Shirley.
Doesn't Shirley have a noticeable minority population? According to my my calculations, 17% of Shirley's residents are Hispanic, and 7% are Black (there might be some overlap, since some Blacks can be counted as Hispanic). It's not as large as North Bellport, but it's noticeable.

My neighborhood is only 17% Hispanic and I don't have any problems.

That said, this entire topic is laughable. I drive around Selden/Centereach and fail to see how these places are "Better" than Shirley. I lived in Setauket and am familar with the entire stretch of 25 (25A as well) and frankly, I hate it. I avoid it at all costs.
N Shirley is very much a middle class neighborhood. Many "Desirable" people moved there during the boom and are still there. They moved to Shirley because they wanted to own a home and didn't think paying a half-a-mil for a house in PJ made any sense. I happen to agree with them.
N Shirley has no center; there's very little shopping, the library, post office, hardware store, etc are SOMEPLACE else.
South Shirley has, IMO, more questionable areas but it's easy to avoid these places.

N Bellport really should not be compared to Shirley. For one, N Bellport is pretty small by comparisson and the N Bellport that people really hear/know about is truly horrible. Problem is, it's a very small area and people WHO DON'T LIVE IN BELLPORT OR THE SURROUNDING AREA fail to understand that a couple square miles does not make the town. N Bellport is scary to the people that aren't from the area. I wouldn't live in N Bellport though.

What I find humerous about CD is after everyone identifies all of the "Great" areas they can't affford to live in, whats left is...everything else. Most people who live in these neighborhoods are quite happy, much to your dismay.
Selden and Centereach are definitely better but obviously not luxury areas. Shirley is worse but not horrific. The areas close to the reservation are sometimes grouped in as part of Shirley and that also hurts their reputation but North Bellport is the worst especially if you are by Post Ave. Simply take into consideration which area you are most likely to be shot or in which area you are most likely to see a daylight, street corner drug deal. North Bellport wins that award.

If I was going to choose, it would be North Shirley with Longwood schools. Preferably on the eastern side of the William Floyd. The areas near the Handy Pantry are really nice and well kept. If you're looking in Shirley, look in Manor Park as well. The zip code is Mastic but most of the area go to Eastport/South Manor schools.
