I work in NYC and I'm thinking of moving to Long Island. Do I still have to pay NYC taxes, or any type of commuter tax?

I was also wondering about the property tax. The house I am considering has taxes of about $12,000. Does that include everything, or is there a Nassau County tax that is seperate?

Saving on the 4% NYC tax would make a big difference in my decision

Thanks

If you live on LI and commute to NYC, you do not have to pay NYC "resident" taxes.

On LI, your total property tax bill includes all taxes. They will be broken down separately on the Statement of Taxes that is sent out once a year. There are a LOT of "taxing districts"; for example, the list on my statement includes

School district
Library district
Suffolk County general fund
Suffolk County police
General Town tax
Town tax excluding villages
Town highway tax
NY State Real Property Tax Law
Fire district
Street lighting district
Town water
Garbage district
Federal EPA Clean-Air Mandate

I would just make sure it's all in. Legally it should be, but sometimes brokers think they're slick and list the village tax seperately.

Yes, as I've mentioned before, I am saving money moving to LI between taxes, auto, and home insurance, no catholic school, etc.

Is there still a NYC Commuters Tax. When I worked in the city I believe it was 1/2 per cent.

Be careful, Mayor Mike is trying to get that tax reinstated & is working hard to push it though (at 1.5 %).

Yes, he has to pay for all those fun social programs he likes so much. I'd love to see the data on how much commuters contribute to the city vs. use in public services. Well, I work on LI and am not sure I would take a job back in the city anyway. I guess if he can't get that, his congestion pricing would, in effect, do the same thing.

A good incentive for LI'ers to stay where they belong. On LI.
