I am!

I took the subway to Jamaica and then took LI Bus home. LI Bus even sent an EXTRA bus to accommodate the large line of people waiting.

I took total advantage of the situation and used it as an excuse to meet some friends and have some cocktails...although I am paying for it today.

Just as we pulled up to the station, a train left going WEST. Supposedly, there is no service in that direction. Spoke to some people on the platform & they said many people got on that train. So still wondering - if they got on there, where are they now? A train to nowhere, according to the LIRR. It was WESTBOUND, and there are supposedly no westbound trains running.
IF it gets them to Jamaica, they'll be OK - they're a pair of seniors who are very subway savvy from 70+ years of taking the subway.

Needless to say, we're quite worried - sleep may be difficult tonight.

This is criminal - the LIRR doesn't know how to shield its equipment?

OH - want to add that I was speaking to a NEWS12 crew, and they said they had been trying to reach the LIRR by phone but were unable to get through. Good job, LIRR!

They didn't take a taxi. They tried, but there weren't any available by the time they got there (they walk very slowly). Also, the people who did take taxis were charged $160 to get to Jamaica. A little price-gouging there?

They did get on a train, but it never left the station. For 45 minutes people were calling the LIRR # flashing on the screen for information, but the # was not working. They learned the service was out from other people on the train who used their cellphones to get info from people at home. No LIRR staff on the train to provide info. Never saw a conductor. They got off & caught an N22 bus to Jamaica. That SEEMED to be a good idea. However, the bus did not go to Jamaica station. It stopped about 2 miles from the Station, and they had to take two more buses to get to the station. At the Station were about 20 busses, sitting there empty. After a wait, they were able to then get a different bus to the Queensboro Bridge, where they were able to get a taxi home to lower manhattan.

Got home at 2:30, after being dropped at Hicksville at 9:15.

Fortunately, this pair are tough old NYers who have been through a lot, including fleeing lower manhattan on 9/11 (This trip was more difficult than that). She is 91, but looks & acts like a youngster of 70!

THe part that was the worst about this fiasco was the total lack of information from the LIRR, and lack of coordination with the MTA. No one at Hicksville knew anything. Actually, there was no one from the LIRR even there - the News12 people were trying to get info as well. And the indoor Waiting Room at Hicksville was closed. Well-lit, but closed. Wouldn't you think that in a situation like this, someone would think to get staff to the station to open the waiting room!?! Lots of people milling around the station, many stranded. And then it was a zoo at Jamaica, again without coordination.
This was all 5 - 6 hours after the outage.

So today we called our State Senator's office, just to let them know about the lack of coordination/information at MTA. This is something we believe there should be some State oversight of. The person at Sen Martin's office interrupted us telling her what had happened and said "We can't do anything. Call the LIRR." She was very snippy. That's how a Senator's staff talks to a constituent?

Some Fun, Eh!

Old new yorkers who fled 911 how old could they be. As bad as that commute was kadt night you are making a mountain out of a molehill. Obviously, you never commute into the city to make such a big deal about the regular nightmare real commuters go through. So did you have a sleepless night?

Welcome to New York State, home of the public employee unions.

Expect this to happen more often, as the fat baby boomer public employee retirees begin to munch on their pensions and nobody gives a crap how anything runs. Just shut up and pay your taxes, that is all you are good for.

They need to bring another railroad into the picture to shut LIRR down or give them some type of competition.

My hubby went to work the day before on the 5am train -- he paid 450.00 for the month and did not get home until 2:00am the next morning. LIRR sucks and someone needs to give LongIslanders another option

Sure..another option...how about we take your house to build another right of way. The LIRR.is the only transportation option. How about we rip their poor management a new rectal opening. I dont like unions and the lirr unions are bad but probably no worse than metro north..but that railroad doesnt have the problems the lirr does.

Good idea. We should have at least two more Railroad options to choose from.
