Huntington has a real nice downtown, but the train station is in Huntington Station, several miles away. Port jefferson is similar - beatiful downtown, with train station a mile or two away

Default Huntington

Yes, Huntington has a great downtown, the train station is near by, but not that close, you would probably need to drive to the train station or get a cab.

It all depends on what you call a downtown (what are the requirements) and what you mean by lacking a train station...no train station within waling distance or none within 5 minutes of driving.

Northport.
There is a Northport train station, but it's in East Northport. I'm still trying to figure that out .. along with the fact that East Northport is due south of Northport.

Or catch a bus. The S1 actually has pretty frequent service, for Suffolk anyway. There's also the H9 that connects to the Huntington LIRR and the H6 bus to Greenlawn.

I'd also like to point out that Riverhead and Greenport have LIRR service, but it's only a few trains per day, so I don't know if that counts.

I believe the current station is east of the original Train station
