better to go down the island, take the ferry to New london and then into boston, vs 95 all the way? We would be leaving from north brooklyn
I take the ferry to go up to Maine. ONLY if its prime time. With little traffic, its about the same time wise. Then again, you hit traffic...that could be hours extra! The ferry IS NOT cheap either. So, you wont be saving on gas if you drove.
It's much preferred to get up in the wee hours of the morning, get a cup of coffee, and drive into the sunrise. You'll be there in no time and your pocket will be a little heavier. You'd be amazed how quickly you can get from point a to b around NYC when you're driving at 4 Am. Of course, when you hit construction.....
To Boston? Why not take Amtrak? 4 relaxing hours with a cafe car too. I think it's like $70 for a regional fare (not Acela)

late answer, but instead of taking 95 all the way, try 95 to I-91 north (New Haven) to I-84 east (Hartford). This goes into the Mass Pike at Sturbridge. Then take Mass Pike into Boston.
If the 91/84 interchange is bad (there are warning signs indicating that beforehand) , get off I-91 at exit 25, then Conn 3 to Conn 2 to I-84 East (signs will guide you to I-84 East).
If the Mass Pike is bad - and it often is - I sometimes take US 20 East (it's right before the Mass Pike entrance) .. it parallels the Mass Pike , and usually moves pretty good for a while before you get into metro Boston. You can find your way back to the Mass Pike if you need to.

There is a spur off 95 in Milford that can get you to the Merritt Pkwy - thanks for mentioning.
I take the Merritt Pkwy to Wilbur Cross sometimes if the weather is good.
There are new rest areas near Meriden with Dunkin Donuts too
95 can be a nightmare around Stamford/Norwalk any time of the day.
On weekdays I have found leaving Suffolk county around 9-10 am can get me to Metro Boston in approx 4 -4 1/2 hours.
