Sorry to say but John McCain is right. If you ever lived in another part of the country you'd understand.
LI has just become an unattractive place. I'm not saying it's armpit of America, but there are many other better regions of the country to live in these days. I am originally from LI and I always will have a soft sport for it, but I cannot live there anymore since living upstate and out west. LI is overpopulated, overpriced, no space, flat, has sky high taxes because of poor tax infrastructure, has horrible traffic. It seems all anyone does there is eat deli food while they gossip and brag about themselves. Most parks don't allow dogs and people have no sense of outdoor recreational activity. Want to go hiking in the morning? Oh wait, they're no mountains on LI. Lets go to the beach? But you'll be stuck in 45 minute traffic, have to fight for a parking space, and end up having your towel two inches away from someone. How about biking? With the exception of Long Beach boardwalk and maybe a few others, there are no nice outdoor biking trails on LI. Most of Nassau County consists of these "turnpike towns" that are denser than osmium, filled with ugly strip malls and levitt homes that are usually right off Jericho or Hempstead Turnpike. North Shore is more spacious and prettier but only millionaires can afford to live there. Suffolk is a little better but it can take more than an hour to get off the island depending where you live. Now there is an SAT scandal, I guess because since people are living on top of each other they feel the need to unnecessarily compete against each other at everything. So they pay other people to take the SAT for their children for them.
Anybody I know who isn't from LI and has visited there does not like it at all and I don't blame them. The overcrowding and overpopulation has led to a poor quality of life on LI and most young people are leaving. The only good thing about LI is pizza and bagels. Places like Denver, San Diego, Tampa, Orlando, DC, and Seattle are way better regions to live in.
I do a fair amount of mountain biking . Believe me there are places to ride here where you can go five miles without seeing another soul. Road biking is another story, I would love to see trails built similar to what exists in suburban Washington DC. and western cities like Portland Oregon.
I don't like to generalize, but having spent time in many of the cities you have mentioned (Denver, Tampa, Orlando, as well as Reno, Las Vegas and Orange County , Calif. ) , it seems the homes in the suburban areas near those cities are packed together like sardines, much like the the spaces between the towels here at our LI beaches you had mentioned.
BTW, a five minute walk away from the concession stand at any LI beach will usually solve that congestion problem
good point. I had commented about this anti-LI attitude in a prior post. Like you, I think this is a pretty damn nice place to live. But I don't understand comments like the one McCain made today . You never hear places like Maryland getting dissed. Yeah, it's supposed to be funny and all that, but makes you wonder what people out there really think about us.
Don't worry, everyone loves New Yorkers, and especially Long Islanders. They just can't get enough of our elegance, finesse, poise and refinement. Not to mention how grateful they feel when an Islander points out how much better the food, schools and beaches are on the Island.

McCain is just a senile RINO, he's not even a real conservative. The fact that he got 46% of the vote on Long Island in 2008 indicates that Long Island isent exactly the Democrat stronghold people make us out to be. 52% isent a supermajority - it's a slim margin. If Long Island were a state and not a 'colony' of New York (that's basically how Albany treats us) it would be one of the top swing states.
The last time a Republican Presidential candidate won Long Island was 1988, not exactly a swing state.... With that being said it wouldn't exactly be solid blue either, likely more along the lines of a Dem leaning state. And McCain certainly is quite conservative, his voting record shows that. He has attempted to reach out to the middle and work across party lines (though he doesn't do that anymore and shifted HARD right around 05/06 or so), but his overall voting record was always fairly conservative and been hard core right over the past 5 years.

Not even close. He use to work across party lines at times so some Republicans decided to label any Republican that attempted to do that a RINO. His voting record for most of his career was generally conservative most of the time, but not hard-core conservative, but over the last 5 years or so he has veered pretty hard to the right, his voting record, scores from ACU and similar groups all bear that out.
His statements were utterly ridiculous, and as was said earlier in the thread he seems to have gone a bit senile.

I agree. I remember not too long ago during the Goldman Sachs / Abacus subprime mortgage fraud hearings, McCain was so out of it! He could barely form a complete sentence or thought, let alone offer anything of value to the hearings; he seemed aloof, like dementia was setting in -- or he had no clue what was going on with the issue. It was pretty embarrassing either way. He should call it quits.

john mccain has alota guts. he stood up to DC he stood up to illegal immigration and would have made a good president. if he does not like long island, so be it, he did not say he spoke for everybody else. i made a big mistake i helped obama get elected. obama debts and war mongers just like bush.

If the US doesent want us then we might as go it on our own. The only issues with independence are accepting the loss of US citizenship and the economic aspect, but hey that hasent derailed independence anywhere else in the world so why should it bother us?
