Did anyone elses property taxes go up. I just recieved ours from the Town of Brookhaven ; House is in Patchogue Village. Our taxes went up by $1200. Last year it was just over $6000 and this year it is $7296.

What gives here? That is a huge jump. The house is assessed at 91% of its full value of $263,000 ; I have it on the market for $219,000 ; just dropped it by a lot.

I'm in the Town of Huntington and mine went up $353. True taxes now $10,816, after grieving again in 2010. Over $7,000 for school taxes

That is a huge jump! Might be worthwhile applying for a grievance, which could be used as part of your marketing if the certiorary company you hire feels you have a valid claim.

I purchased a house in Nassau in January 2011 for about $100k more than the estimated value on mynassauproperty.com.

Am I in for some pain, and if so, when?

Good luck to you in selling the house soon! This is a perfect example of what I mean when I say the school districts and local government need to wake up and realize it is NO LONGER "Oh raise the taxes as much as we want because the sky's the limit on what we can charge!"

I feel like it's getting to the point where the cost of the property taxes are standing in the way of the sales of some of the homes on LI, particularly the "starter" lower cost ones. And if you compare the higher prices of homes (many attached or semi-attached with no yards) within NYC to the prices of better homes on LI, you can see that the high property taxes have negatively impacted the value of the homes on LI.

go on the county website and see what it states for taxes:

Land Record Viewer

If you feel you are or might be overassessed, grievance deadlline is March 31st. Look for the info online as well.

This has something to do with it:
Tough choice for William Floyd district

Every school got hit from the cuts Cuomo made to school district budgets on Long Island.

Who wants to be a newly married couple and buy a home and throw away $7000 in school taxes? Hopefully I can hold my ground with the fiance and stay as a renter until I have children, if I had it my way I'd rent until my children were old enough to attend school.

I pay $1700 in rent in a complex with nice amentities, as a couple it beats being a home owner paying $11,000/yr in taxes regardless of people telling me I'm throwing money away on renting. To me I'd be throwing money away paying those rediculous taxes as well.

Yes pequa, I was unfortunately hit with this - Floyd's taxes went up more then any other district on the Island - 12%.

Horrible.
