Expect the numbers to rise as social services are cut due to layoffs.

Nice job, Ed. I'm so very glad I live in Suffolk.

This isn't condeming of your County Supervisor; it is all about our crappy economy and drug problems.
IMO we will keep seeing these types of crimes (robberies, burglaries, etc.) rise while violent crimes will drop, at least in our area. I'm not an expert, but I just don't see murder rising in Nassau County.

You need to be worried about burglaries and robberies, not murder. Although obviously a serious crime, murder bears no resemblance to other violent crimes. In most murders the victim and perpetrator know each other. Murder's raw numbers are exceeding low. And it is a crime that is almost impossible to prevent. It is not a good indicator of violent crime in an area.

Robberies and burglaries, however, have significantly larger raw numbers and do not usually involve people who know each other. And they can largely be prevented through increased police presence. Increases in those crimes are cause for alarm in the community.

Whats the alternative? Keep raising taxes until there is no more money left to tax?

Police staffing on the street has not changed from 2010 to 2011. Any increase in police staffing will be minimal, won't make a difference, adding one more car to a place like Valley Stream is close to meaningless.

Sorry to disagree, but police staffing has declined. Don't be fooled by overall numbers of personnel assigned to patrol. In order to deal with robbery and burglary, you need the flexibility to assign additional people to those areas impacted, often in non-traditional patrol methods. When those resources are removed to fill marked units responding to calls for service, that flexibility is lost.

And a single car in an impacted area absolutely makes a difference. High visibility patrol is an effective deterrent to such crimes as robbery and burglary, especially when those crimes are occurring in a defined area.

Too bad it is so expensive to add staffing

Very cute. But simple fact is we have budget deficits. If we do not make cuts, we have to keep raising taxes. And we already have some of the highest taxes in the Nation.

I can tell you the pistol licensing bureau is more short staffed than ever. Waited over an hour a couple of weeks ago to register a new toy.
