I've never been to the eastern parts of Long Island but from reading other posts I've come to the conclusion that E. LI and N. Westchester (around Katonah/Bedford) are pretty comparable. The homes are more spread out, there's more a small town feel. Quaint but still classy but still fairly close to New York. Is this true? Are these to areas comparable? If so, which one is better in your opinion?

Eastern Long Island has awesome & ugly areas. The biggest difference is that eastern LI generally will get a lot less snow then Northern Westchester in the winter. In the summer the sea breeze keeps eastern Long Island much cooler than Westchester.

Not true. I live on the North Shore of Nassau county and find this statement being a little harsh and possibly represents the Nassau county mentality of some of these towns. In Suffolk, Towns such as Huntington Village, Smithtown, Babylon ( to name a few) are much nicer and friendlier towns than some of these north shore towns in western Nassau. Some of these north fork towns have a New England feel where the people are friendly and kind (in general). In Nassau, you have Glen Cove and hempstead which is a dump, Great Neck and parts of Roslyn where the folks are just cold and nasty to name a few.

Yes and no.

I think you are right that parts of eastern Long Island have a small town feel, at least the 5 most eastern towns in Suffolk; Southold, Riverhead, Southampton, East Hampton and Shelter Island. In addition, Upper Westchester and eastern Suffolk have some development restrictions to protect water supplies. And both areas had a cultural influence from Connecticut. Suffolk County was even part of Connecticut at one time.

But there are some differences. Eastern LI is obviously much more attuned to the water; swimming, boating, sailing and fishing etc. There is still a small maritime fishing industry and obviously the Hamptons are a famous tourist area.

Also, eastern LI still has a large farming industry, especially in Riverhead and Southold. Supposedly Suffolk is still one of the more important farming counties in New York, which is kind of suprising with all the development. To my knowledge Westchester does not have much farming anymore, although I do remember seeing horse farms in the Lewisboro and North Salem areas.
