I believe that Long Islands overall crime will go down in the hotspots such as Wyandanch, Brentwood, Huntington Station,
North Bellport, and N Amittyville because the Shotspotter was put in place. And in doing so crime in above average (for LI)
crime towns such as Mastic, East Patchogue, Shirley, Riverhead (some areas) and other areas will be more prevalent or will
be looked at as getting worse. Even though the areas where ShotSpotters were put in place have been known as ghettos since
the 80's or even before then. I know its not going to stop all crime, criminals can use knives, etc. What's everyone's opinions? http://www.longislandpress.com/2011/...uffolk-county/ http://www.newsday.com/long-island/s...test-1.3406381
Works OK outdoors but if a gun is fired indoors it's much less effective. You can also get false readings especially from fireworks.
"The system was activated on Sunday in Huntington Station, Brentwood, North Amityville and Wyandanch. North Bellport was activated on Thursday. Police will not divulge the exact location of the devices, and said that there have been alerts since Sunday but no confirmed shootings."
I know that in North Amityville, most of the shootings happen at house parties (most of the times being indoors), so it might not be as effective there. In Wyandanch, I know it would be very effective since most shooting occur outdoors.
On another note, i'm surprised Uniondale was mentioned on that article. I don't hear much coming from there.

Most shootings I hear about are on the victims's front lawns. But you are right about every community is different. North Amittyville along with Brentwood/C.I. have a lot house party shootings as well as outside shootings. I heard half of Brentwood/ Huntington Sta shootings are cases of mistaken identity (gang colors) (someone walking down the street). So they should deal with more policing and better community involvement/ parenting.

The last several years have seen a lot of gang violence between rival gangs MS-13 and Salvadorans With Pride in Uniondale (as well as Hempstead).
It's so sad that some people from the city and other countries have to bring their gang life out here.
A lot of these kids make fun of rich kids from affluent areas trying to act thugged out but what they don't realize is that they aren't much better if they are living in the suburbs are trying to be hard and "gangsta".
Doubt it but rather have money put on this then red light cameras.
counties do not lay out the money for cameras , the camera company does and gets its money from the fines issued by the county ...
