Actually places like the Brentwood Country Club are nice, because while being inexpensive, they also handle everything there in one place, from flowers, photography and video to invitations and limos.
Ive actually been to weddings at both places and was not impressed with either. In fact, I could never go back and not miss it.

I agree with other posters, if you can keep the guest list down a restaurant is your best bet.

We don't want a church wedding at all!
We'd prefer somewhere near the beach or a lake view but that's not too important.

We're aiming for the wedding to be June 16th of this year.
She wants it to be on Fire Island but I'm sure that will be too expensive.

We don't have a budget right now because we're waiting on her aunt to tell us how much she can chip in, but my mother will be able to put in about 3,000. I'm guessing her aunt will be able to put in about 2,000 so I'm going to leave it at a 5k budget.

I know our budget is limited but I'm really hoping there are some people who can help us out.

Do you want the traditional wedding reception? I think it may be hard finding a place that will do that for such a small number. I would look into some of the Knights of Columbus halls. There are some that are very, very nice and offer food service or you can cater from outside.

For 25 people, I would find a very nice restaurant and have a planned menu. You can do something elegant for $50 per person and it would keep you under budget but again, it all depends on what you want.

But how would the OP play the "keeping up with the Joneses" game or go into heavy financial debt by just going to a restaurant like some lower class citizen?

I'll second Irish Coffee Pub. We went to a birthday party there and they did a very nice job with service and food. It's not four-star gourmet quality, but I would much rather go there than a place like Milleridge Inn. As for George Washington Manor in Roslyn, it's now Hendrick's Tavern and both food quality and prices have gone up exponentially.

If you want to try and take over an entire small restaurant, consider either Cedar Creek in Glen Cove or Bistro Citron in Roslyn. The former has great food and great service and they do private parties all the time. You should be able to do something for around $100 a head, which would leave you money for DJ, valet, decorations, etc.

I got married last year and tried my best to stay at a modest budget. Unfortunately, $5,000 won't get you too far. The best rate I got was for Smithtown Landing Country Club. Their prices were great and they had a very low guarantee. They're always running specials for closer upcoming dates and the off peak seasons. This was for a true 5 hour party with cocktail hour, sit down dinner, cake. However, you need to take into account a DJ, florist, and all the other "extras" that come with a big party. If you want to do something more low key and in your price range, I highly recommend the Irish Coffee Pub (food is amazing!!) or 21 Main in Sayville (food is great and I just love the building itself). Best of luck to you and congratulations!!

I recently looked into the Stony Brook Yacht Club to schedule an event. If you go with a 4 hour buffet with a carving station, premium liquor full open bar, (+ service charge and tax) you're looking at $3,800. for 50 adults.
Sit down dinner with premium liquor full open bad (+service charge and tax) for the 4 hours is $3,650. (50 adults)

Either package, the cheapest open bar option was $12 pp unlimited domestic bottled beer and house wine. The premium plan I gave above is $18 pp. House liquors, wine and domestic beer is $15 pp

The Stony Brook Yacht Club not a bad place, I'd suggest looking even looking into a local VFW to see what packages they offer.

After people eat - what's next?

I was a Mobile DJ for many years, did 100's of weddings though out Long Island. The most expensive wedding ever did was over $50,000 at the Oheka Castle in Huntington. One of the best (low cost) weddings was at the local VFW in Stoney-Brook, over 100 guests, DJ, video, liquor, including the wedding dress was $5000. That bride was really organized, plus many people brought food and drinks. I also did many back yard weddings - including ceremony and the reception. The problem with backyard party's, after a certain time, had to lower the volume. I do not recommend a beach wedding because o the bugs, weather and your guests walking in the sand (which is harder for older guests).

Really suggest looking into a DJ - having entertainment is an important part of a successful party. People are not going to remember years later if the food was good or bad. They will remember if they had a good time. Starting with the introduction of the wedding party, to the first dance, through dinner, cake and last dance. Depending on how lively your want your party to be, including games to get people on the dance floor (with the bride and groom). A Having a DJ will make your party more remember-able.

Here's something you can do, a photo-montage of you and your spouse, along with pictures of guest that will be at your party. Scanning pictures into a video program and people that have been part of your lives, this one really be one of the highlights of your party.

Good Luck....

The Stony Brook Yacht Club just underwent an overhaul, has a chef in place who is very good. It's the best it has been in the 16 years I've been a member.

There's a VFW on Jones St in East Setauket -- is that the one you're referring to?

Had dinner there one evening while a wedding was in progress. Dinner patrons had to walk through part of the cocktail hour!
