In addition to costs any discussions between paid & volli has to included the level of service each would provide. Lets be honest, if there's a active fire weekdays during the day you'll probably be getting several teenagers and a few elderly men. They'll probably be pouring water on your foundation!

Compare that to a crew from FDNY coming to your house fire. Need I say more?

This money can easily be found in all of the waste. We do not need 71 fire departments. This country is heading to Greece. Wake up people. Like someone else stated government has no reason to stop spending when they can ultimately place a gun to your head.

Schumer Announces FEMA Aid for Local Fire Departments - Lynbrook, NY Patch

Also get this quote from Schumer: "Now, help is on the way – FEMA has agreed to pick up the tab, and Nassau taxpayers are spared the cost." EVERYTHING IS FOR FREE !!!! Free contraceptives as well.

"'[O]ver-burdened' fire departments – and then on to Nassau County taxpayers."

Lynbrook Chief: “We’re happy that Senator Schumer is helping us with the grant – he’s always been a friend of the fire service."

The NY Republicans and Democrats. They love to spend YOUR MONEY.

Holy thread resurrection green2102, you must really have a chip on your shoulder.

You realize there are 71 Departments because there are that many municipalities. This isn't Soviet Russia where officials can dissolve governmental entities as they see fit.

Long Islanders get amazing fire service at an amazing price.

If you want to consolidate departments or create mutual agreements that eliminate apparatus join your local fire company. Raise up through the ranks, get elected to Chief of your department. Serve a full term as Chief and then get elected to your regional fire council. Assuming you join at 17 you'll be 50-65 when that is all said and done.

EricJL did you read all of my previous posts ? Do understand why there are so many and the politics behind these departments ? Each party loves these entities. Did you read the Newsday articles that I posted ? Should we the TAXPAYERS just ignore this spending spree while I work my way up the ranks ? I am educating the taxpayer. If it was not for the Internet we would probably just continue just being ignorant taxpayers. Thank you for your suggestion.

Aside from the few city and village municipal fire departments, and not all villages have municipal fire departments, the vast majority of the 96 fire districts (25 fire districts do not have fire departments and pay other districts to provide firemanic services) are not coterminous with the village or hamlet whose name they share.

That is not necessary: just get elected to the Board of Commissioners of your local fire department, and you can be as young as 18 to qualify.

Moderator cut: snip

Yes Walter you are right the municipalities do not directly match up with the number of departments. You seem to be an SME on this so how many municipalities are there on Long Island?

Many departments actually cover numerous villages, which unlike Towns have the right to raise their own department. I'd be willing to bet that if every village had its own department there would be a lot more than 71 Depts.

Not every Fire Department has a Board of Commissioners. Furthermore at the local level there is limited ability, and willpower, to laterally make agreements. Commissioners are typically administrators so while you're right an 18y/o can get elected as one its probably not the right place to make it happen.

I can't think of a single example of standardization between departments that wasn't orchrastrated through a fire council or the county's FireCom. Also while there's no requirement to be an ex-Chief/Captain your opinions won't have much weight without being one.

Remember the Police Commissioner race in PW? The 18 year old didn't even win, let alone get elected to see if his opinions would matter.

Not counting the 13 towns (3 in Nassau and 10 in Suffolk):

In Nassau County, there are 2 cities and 64 villages, as well as 70 hamlets.

In Suffolk County, there are 33 villages, as well as 124 hamlets and 2 Indian reservations.

Excluding the municipal fire departments and the IIFCs, almost all other FDFDs do have a Board of Commissioners that acts in a manner similar to a school board.

Moderator cut: snip I am tired of hearing about the politicians all around the country stating how we cannot let go of fireman, police (now first responders - as if non-fireman and police are not) and teachers or cut expenses. Very tired. All three are bloated and should be cut or should be privatized to a great extent. The politicians and the three professions above are hand in hand. So are many of the non-profits, associations and environmental groups. And now with the federal government we have so are the many big corporations. When will the spending stop ?

It does not matter how any villages, etc. There are too many. We need ambulances but not so many fire trucks. Just ignore it.

Citing again a document created by a commission in 2008 that was paid with our tax dollars: http://www.nyslocalgov.org/pdf/LGEC_...mode=bookmarks

Portion of preface. Page 3.

To the Citizens of New York State: People are demanding change at all levels of government. They are frustrated by a local tax burden that is the highest in the nation. They value their communities, but want modern, efficient services at an affordable price.
Our Commission was launched with the conviction that New Yorkers are living under a very outdated local government structure. The vast majority of our municipalities were established and their boundaries set during the horse-and-buggy era. There are also outdated laws and offices for which no modern rationale exists. Over the years we have added to this outdated system, but rarely simplified, and today we have nearly 5,000 local government entities. Substantial savings are available if we choose to modernize.”

Where are the changes ? Where are the policitians speaking up and taking action ? This commission reminds me of President Obama's commission with regard to the debt. Just ignore it. Let the next few generations take care of it.
