I am moving to Long Island from Minneapolis in February. I will be working in Riverhead at the Outlet mall. I am a single male and have no idea where a good place to live is. All I want is a safe peaceful area with easy access to grocery stores. Would like to be in an area with intelligent open minded people who are easy going. I have priced apartments and they are very similar to Minneapolis ($1000-$2500) depending on how far east on the island.
If anyone could give insight into commute times, neighborhoods or people that would be great.
Also, is the city of Riverhead a good place to live? I have been to the island multiple times but only for work so I never get a chance to explore. I don't really care about nightlife, but enjoy small friendly communities. I missed that while living in Minneapolis for the past few years.
You could probably do well looking east on the north fork...Aquebogue/Southold/Mattituck are all small towns within 30 min of the outlet mall. They get busy during summer/fall weekends, but it's a really nice area.
OnlyMeAndKitty, in case you are unfamiliar with the local geography, I've sent you an explanation of the very, very confusing geography of "Lawn Guyland" as a DM (Direct Message).

Perfect advice, could not have said it better.
