When I was a kid I used to live in queens on the corner of 88th street and union turnpike. I played outside my house on the sidewalks and rode my bike up and down from one end of the block to the other. Granted I was not allowed in the street or out by myself (5 years old) but I still played outside, no back yard and I was fine. Touche. I was a Queens kid too. There was a very busy street (4 lanes) at the end of my block. We were allowed to play outside but there were rules, stay out of the street don't cross the main road without permission. We never had an issue. I wonder if my parents were as obsessed about it as I am...
Getting back to the subject of New Hyde Park Road, as if to demonstrate a point, Garden City Patch had a story and pics yesterday of an SUV versus minivan accident with injuries on New Hyde Park Rd and Salisbury Ave where the SUV ended up on a front lawn.

Gotcha @ Crooks. Ah..stickball, round-up, manhunt..."those were the days." However, there is no part of me that believes that that is what my children will experience. We are just looking for a nice neighborhood with good schools. We can take care of the rest. I am appreciative of all of the info and opposing opinions shared.
