Just curious to hear everyone's key likes and dislikes about their towns (with apologies to walter for the use of the word town).

After a year of looking in sea cliff and glen head, we moved to the promenade area of Glen Head.

Likes: Hilly, pretty, houses are extremely well-maintained, good restaurants, taxes aren't horrible, walkable for the most part, variety of home styles, everything from arts and crafts to colonials to a few tudors even

Dislikes: Not much, though I think I would have preferred the vibe in sea cliff, LIRR line sucks, house prices are still fairly insane

Plainview Likes: only 5-star library in all of NYS, central to everything (highways too, LIRR 10mins away), tree-lined streets, good schools, Shoprites

Dislikes: lots of old drivers , $12k taxes for a ranch.

Some say it's boring but I'm 34 with kids. I don't know what it needs to make it exciting. Grew up here too.

I'll do one for my old residence...

Hicksville Likes: LIRR 5 mins away, plenty of shopping and ethnic foods, decent neighborhoods nestled in pockets, free community pools, central location, $7k taxes!

Dislikes: traffic near the mall/LIRR between 4-6pm (mornings were fine), road conditions, library, schools (why we moved), industrial feeling on Broadway

I from W.Babylon(N.Bab school dist. portion) and don't have any dislikes. It would be nice if it was a little more walkable though.

+ Short commute to major LI job centers like Melville/Hauppauge/E.Farmingdale
+ Lower cost of living compared to most other middle class LI areas
+ Very safe
+ Decent schools
+ Choice of Babylon branch and Ronkonkoma Branch of LIRR: in Manhattan in 55 mins.
+ Not too stuck-up
+ Close to major roadways
+ Near Belmont Lake State Park
+ Close but far-away from major shopping centers
+ All different styles of houses
+ Quiet

West Islip
Likes: Low crime rate, largely homogenous population, conservative/Republican leaning, decent schools.
Dislikes: little commercial activity, practically no places to eat out aside from pizza places and Chinese takeouts, high taxes, the need to go outside West Islip for practically all shopping, social activities, and eating out.

I currently live in North Lindenhurst, have lived in East, Park, and regular Massapequa (and still spend weekends in East---but west of Carman Mill), and lived in Amityville the longest

(North) Lindenhurst
Likes:
-diversity (though 75-80% non-hispanic white, a good portion of the white population is North African, far eastern Europe)
-large downtown
-people are nice

Dislikes:
-not very walkable, except near the downtown
-schools have been deteriorating a little bit over the years and are about to deteriorate even more sharply with the new 2% tax-cap.
-too sportive

Massapequa's
Likes:
-very walkable
-high quality of education in schools
-lots of good eats

Dislikes:
-no diversity
-some people have snobby attitudes
-largest drugport on the island
-keep up with the jones'

Amityville
Likes:
-Victorian theme
-colonial houses
-strong community feel
-very walkable
-no snobs

Dislikes:
-librarians at the library are racist, I was going to go to school in Amityville but my mother listened to the librarians, who despise the mostly-black SD, and I went to school in Massapequa using my Dad's adress. I would grow to dislike Pequa, especially after my Mother moved there too once the school found out that I didn't really "live" in Massapequa, and she went to desperate measures to make sure I went to PS23. After learning to hate Pequa, I moved to Lindenhurst, which is worse than Amityville.
-very segregated. Look at the census tracts----south of Merrick Rd is 90% White, the rest of the village is 64% white, North Amityville is 10% white.

The drugport IS Massapequa. I get this stuff from
1st: the fact that there was a drug dealer living across the street from an (my) ELEMENTARY school.
2nd: people from Massapequa bragging about it
3rd: people that go to private schools talking about how they had assemblies about Massapequa HS's heroin problem.
4th: people from Lindy saying that when I tell them where I'm from.
Even if it's false, having at least the reputation like that makes me dislike it.
