wow, really? Not sure if I believe this. This goes against the logic of why food costs what it does, doesn't it?

One would expect things to get cheaper when transportation, storage, packaging and misc middle-man profit is cut out of the loop...

Unfortuantely that's been my experience; there's a lot of produce that is not domestically grown which is very inexpensive due in part to labor even cheaper than US migrant farm worker labor.

BTW, check out Giunta's Meat Farms on Route 112 in Medford (I think there is another in Ronkonkoma on Portion Rd.), they have a good selection of affordable produce. It's actually about 2-3 miles south of C-Town where Old Medford Ave. meets Route 112.

THe farm stands do not grow all that they have out. Its a well known trick. only things labled our own, or local are what is produced here. if a farm stand has tomatoes out and it just lists tomatoes and a price its from NJ.

That's true. If a farm stand sold bananas it wasn't authentic enough for my parents who would mockingly call them "local bananas."

In the warmer months, try the little red farm stand in yaphank
