When did Fire Island start attracting the gay crowd, and how did it happen?

I am not bashing anyone's sexual preference. I am just curious as to how things like this happen

My uncle used to own a restaurant on Fire Island. I used to go there and crab. Some of my fondest memories.

So I have a right to know.

According to wikipedia
Quote:
After the Manhattan theater community began staying on Fire Island during the 1920s, the island had numerous summer celebrity residents.

I "swear to god", when I was a kid going to fire island, it WAS NOT A GAY COMMUNITY!

Could it be that they were just on another section? I understand fire island is pretty long.

As an owner of a house there, I can tell you that Fire Island as a whole does not attract a gay crowd, but that there are but two towns famous for their largely gay population -- the Pines and Cherry Grove. Those are the places people think of when they hear the words, "Fire Island," and therefore think of Fire Island as one long, sandy cruising ground.

However, I bet that the Pines and Cherry Grove are a hell of a lot more fun and exciting (not to mention fabulous!), than most of the other villages.

I grew up in Sayville, Moderator cut: rude I mean ferries leave for cherry grove and the pines. Those two communities have been gay for almost 100 years. They take the train from the city to sayville and the local taxi buses them down to the ferry. I guess there are more and more "coming out" so they are spreading. They have some wild fun nightclubs over there, They also have the miss fire Island contest every year . that is basicly transvestites. they are a blast and alot of fun dont be to worried. peace.

I've been wanting to go to FI for YEARS...gay or not. Pictures, videos, etc. seem wonderful, but I'm sure like with most else it doesn't do it justice. Just the idea of there being, basically, no cars and water all around sounds amazing. Gotta get over there.

Brady, if you don't mind me asking, where is your house, how long have you had it, any recommendations?

Default gay neighborhoods

Gay neighborhoods are some of the best.

Gays (gay men anyway) can turn marginal areas into desirable ones, probably faster than any other defined group can. I wish that the Island had more gay neighborhoods. Aside from the high end restaurants, art galleries, clubs and antique stores, home purchased in up and coming gay neighborhoods are destined to go up in value.

I couldnt agree more....Look at Sayville

In speaking with other Civic members ...I wish more Gay Friendly Realtors and Restaurants etc would set up shop in Rocky Point.

Thw town has a quirky bohemian vibe with all its cottages and summer homes.

It has a Downtown which is screaming for culture .
(Plus its an absolute bargain...you can still get a cheap storefronts for under 1k/mo on Broadway)
It's come a long way over the last few years ...but it still got a long way to go.
It's a Character in search of a play.

Im confident it wont stay that way for long.
