The article below says that a Cable Box uses as much electricity as a refrigerator. I called Cablevision and they said their boxes are energy compliant. I checked Energy Star's website and the box(es) I have are not on the list.

Does anyone have any information on the cost of keeping a cable box plugged in? I don't believe everything I read AND I don't believe everything a Cablevision representative tells me.....

My guess would be no. But most of the time you can find out the wattage for electronic devices.

i know verizon's services take up more than cables services. as for a cable box using as much electricty as a fridge, thats insane. a fridge is always running and a cable box is not.

Actually, a fridge isn't always running and a cable box is (not many people turn off their cable box, but just the tv)

A cable box is always running even when off. how do you think that clock works?
Most cable boxes these days are essentially Cable Modems and a small PC.

the time AND the actual cable box are two different things. you press the power off, the cable service shuts off and the time remains on. do you know those outlets on the back of the box where people plug non hd tvs into? when a box is powered "off", the tv shuts off, hence making the box off.

if the time is working in a car on a clock but the engine is off, does that means the car is running? in your words, that would be a "yes".

There is a battery in a car and the time works off that. It is not the same.
