Ignore the map for anything but school district. SD is the #1 of importance on LI. How the SD rates is how the neighborhood is..

Thus, about 8 out of every 10 places with a "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" mailing address are NOT in the Village of New Hyde Park.

Places that have a "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" mailing address that are not in the Village of New Hyde Park are in the Village of Lake Success, the Hamlet of Manhasset, the Village of North Hills, the Hamlet of Manhasset Hills, the Hamlet of North New Hyde Park, the Hamlet of Herricks, the Hamlet of Garden City Park and the Village of Garden City.
Walter, you are the one who makes it confusing!!!!!

Excellent advice. First try out the job(s) and the area. It's better to buy when you know the Island better instead of buy upfront with less information.

Hi,

Would you think the housing market will keep going down in that area?

My wife's job will be pretty stable for at least several years...

Regards,
Hipo

Just visit, and go to any hardware store, we sell crystal balls pretty cheap on LI. They're everywhere now. Too bad, they were non existent 15 years ago when we could have seen all the changes on LI coming!

Anything pertaining to Herricks/East Williston/Williston Park is all top of the line schools and areas to live. New Hyde Park is slightly under it. Mineola is so-so (more blue collar and many Portugese just like Providence). Huntington is a mixed bag. You really need to research Huntington area and schools a lot before making a committment. Do not buy here right away. It takes a while to get the swing of things and it could be a costly mistake as what is perceived as a sound investment in other parts of the country does not necessarily apply here.

I agree.
The OP has enough questions just in moving out of RI to LI. Why are we trying to confuse her over information about hamlets/villages, when MOST people use zip code anyways.

Like I said before SD is the more important thing. The OP should rent for a bit anyways to adjust and learn LI living before making a big investment in a house.

Using ZIP Codes would be great if the majority of ZIP Code postal zones were coterminous with the communities whose name they share.

Unfortunately, that is not the case.

On LI, You Ain't Where You Think You Are, rev. 3 may help you understand the great geographic confusions caused by non-conforming ZIP Code postal zones.

Hipogrito, I can pretty well guarantee that there is not one person on L.I. that buys a home here or has lived here for their entire life for that matter that really understands, nor even cares to understand the nuances of the Island. It is really of little import. If you know the area you are interested in here are a few websites that are very helpful regarding th schools

Schools in Nassau County, New York: Compare by Type, Grade Level, Ratings, and More

Long Island Schools - School Districts

Again, pay no attention to the discussion about zip codes and hamlets and all the rest of the minutia. If you do, you will find yourself mired in useless information that is best relegated to a rainy day. The nuances of LI can be entertaining but not when you need solid info for moving. Pic a location and a school district that fits your budget. I second the notion of renting a place for a year to see where you feel most comfortable and then buy from there.
