If you want to keep good usable access to the city, you'll want to be within a 30-40 minute single-seat train journey IMO. Once you've added on getting to the station and getting from the terminal to your destination you're looking at an hour already. Anything more than that is going be wearing on ya.

I know you are right. We fell in love with a house in LV and haven't bid on it because we have such reservations about the distance and our QOL that we are accustomed to for leisurely activities. It's an amazing house BUT it is just a house and we need to love everything about it. We want/need city accessibility and a nice downtown area. We have to stop looking there and it's surrounding hamlets. Have to get it out of my mind and stick to PW line

In that case you should be fine finding a place. Just don't even go looking in the nice areas too far away - nothing good can come of it!

It's tempting when you see that you can get more for your money. I just needed to hear someone else say it. Thanks

Default Commuting to LV

Yes, the LV train line is a bit of a hike. Some trains (pre Sandy) go straight to Penn, but most require a change in Jamaica. The PW line is better.

Note the Long Island Transit executive bus service that runs from Glen Cove to Wall Street and Midtown is quite good. Limited though.
