Does anybody have any input on the school districts on the North Fork of LI. I feel just because I live "all the way out here" my son will not be receiving services that he needs. Thank you
We are in the Southold school district. I have not heard much good about their special ed program, but hear that Mattituck is good. We are just starting on this path, our son Conor, 23 months, was just diagnosed autistic. I am so confused, I don't know which way to turn

Well he is still young enough to get services through Early Intervention. Contact them first. When he is 3 he will go through the school district.

He is starting his early intervention next week, but they are already talking about setting things up for when he turns 3. Do I choose where he goes at 3 or does the school district decide?
You have a CPSE meeting where the law states that everyone decides. The district the county and the parents are all equal members of the Commitee on Preschool Education meeting.
Boodymom--the other day, a parent of an autistic child was telling me about Wrightslaw Special Education Law and Advocacy, a resource for special ed law issues. You are going to have to be your child's biggest advocate, so start learning your rights now.
Best of luck to you. It must be very overwhelming.
If the West Islip district is not giving your son the services he needs, you must demand them.As a taxpayer you are enttiled to certain things. How dare your speech therapist and the principal be put off by your requests.Tell them you are going to sue them.Keep fighting and dont give up.
Boodymom- There are plenty programs for your son you have to go out and get them. Thank goodness your in NY I think he will be very well cared for. My son went to Variety Child Learning Centre in Syosset and now attends Little Village in Seaford. Both very good schools. Look into Speech therapy Occupational and even Physical therapy if he needs it. The schools I mentioned do these therapies at the school. Do your research talk to people go online, you are your son's biggest advocate!!
I am interested in Hewlett Woodmere. If anyone knows about this district let me know.
