Honestly, these people in the Nassau Department of Assessment are unreal. We filed the STAR Exemption application in-person at TOB in December and I was checking online to make sure everything was processed okay. I didn't see any indication online that we were receiving the STAR exemption for 2014, so I called the automated service, to check on the Exemption Status and they gave NO information except that our last filed/approved Exemption application was from 2012-2013, when we didn't even own the home yet. So, I asked to speak to a representative and was actually surprised when one answered before 9am and I told her we applied in December, but I haven't seen any indication that our application was reviewed or anything and she laughs and says, "Yeah, we don't work that fast."
So, she asks me my information and she tells me, "It's been received, but hasn't been processed." I said, "Well, I hope it's been received since we filed it in person." Ultimately, that application has sat untouched since we filed it over a month ago. I don't get it.
I find that TOB will always give you the information you're looking for and they're pretty good with housekeeping (nothing gets lost). But they are not so good with manners or presentation. As for working fast, I guess it just depends on what it is specifically.
Sorry not to derail the subject but it is kinda related...I just closed on a house last week & was wondering as a new homeowner is there any way to still get STAR even though the deadline has passed? Is there any grace period for new homeowners in 2014? Thanks :-)

I don't know the answer to your question but I had to pop in and say that you should start a new thread. You'll get better responses that way.

You would probably qualify with the previous owner's reduction. When we moved in we even got the seller's veteran exemption until it fell off the next year. Go ahead and file now even though it qualifies for the following year.

But doesnt what you get depend on your income... Or no? So if you make more or less than the previous owner are you allowed to just take over theirs?

The income limit is $500,000. Most people probably qualify. When you , as a new home owner, submit this year's form that is due in March , it is for NEXT year (2015), though , not this current year as you might think.
