Nassau considers pay-per-flush sewer fee plan - New York News | New York Breaking News | NYC Headlines

How is it legal that the county can create some many fees/charges/etc with an insane amount that ultimately affects our finical situation. Sooner or latter we might have to pay a tax on how many times we start the stove

I know Queens water is so expensive that people don't flush after every use. I can't believe that an area like ours where water is so inexpensive that it may come down to doing the same thing.

Part of me likes the idea for one reason: maybe now all those houses with illegal apartments and non CO bathrooms will pay their fair share for the sewer service they use.

I wonder how they would know how many times a house flushes? Do they have any way of telling now? and how can they tell if its a flush compared to just water going down the drain..isnt like it goes to the sewer in different pipes.

The honor system of course , each month you send them the flush count..

Actually most utilities "assume" that x% is going down the drain and thats how the sewage treatment is calculated. We have where you can get a meter on the outside water spigot for those that garden alot so your not paying excessive sewer fees on that water.

Like numerous other cities have put in place, you may have two meters one day. One that measures usage and one that measures output. Usually if they are balanced then there is no real change to your billing. But there has been instances where commercial used water was dumped into residential sewage lines. Thus the output is out of balance. You need to remember that sewage treatment plants are limited by what they can process. By installing output the meters the county can hunt down where the illegal dumping is happening and bring it to a stop. Now as to privatization, the county could easily budget it since it becomes a fixed expense, while if its county run there is no way to budget OT payroll for example.

Strange, I thought everyone's sewer fee was based on water usage (water meter readings). That's the way it worked in my home town for....ever. But then, in my home town, lawn sprinklers (especially the in-ground type) are generally only found on golf courses; with the result most water does end up down the drain.

To have the sewer fee based on property value makes no sense to me.
