I live in NYC and want to join the fdny but dont only want to test in the city. I want to stay in the city to get the extra points on the exam. Are there any other paid depts. around NYC the don't require Residency?

Most, if not all, Long Island Fire Departments are volunteer organizations where the fire fighters are not paid. If you are looking for a paid fire fighting job, I'd continue looking at FDNY. I'm not sure about fire departments in Westchester or New Jersey.

Of course, if you'd like to volunteer on Long Island, I am sure that any department would be glad to have you!

City of Long Beach and Village of Garden City are the only LI depts. that have paid firemen. You have a better chance of hitting the lottery than getting a job there.

There's also the USVA Hospital in Northport. US Veterans Affairs has their own police and fire/rescue departments. At one point LIPA/Keyspan had their own fire department for their power plants but I am not sure if they still exist. Oh and the Brookhaven National Lab also has their own police and fire/rescue departments.

Most Long Island fire departments also have paid paramedics and EMTs. I think that a few have some paid firefighters for the day shift.
