I'm a little confused about what I should do about my vehicle registrations and would appreciate advice. About a year ago I accepted a job in NY and got an apartment in the city (didn't bring a car to the city). I have a house in Florida and spend about 4/5 months in Florida and still have some business there. I have a FL license and two cars are registered in FL. I plan on driving one of the cars back to NY in about a month now that I live in Great Neck and have a place to park the car. I plan on leaving the 2nd car in FL and never bringing that vehicle to NY.
Last year I really thought that my primary residence would be FL and that I was only going to be in NY part-time, so I didn't change my license or registration(s) to NY, but after counting my days in both locations, it now looks like NY could likely be my primary residence.
What I think I should do is:
1) get NY license
2) get NY insurance on my car that is mostly in NY
3) keep FL car registered in FL and insured in FL
My questions are:
a) Does the above sound like the right thing to do or should I just call my insurance company in FL and tell them that the car is going to be in NY 1/2 the year.
b) If I do end up getting NY license, if I get pulled over in FL driving my FL registered car with a NY license am I going to have a problem?
c) What do I need to bring to NY to get my car registered? I have the title and current registration. I purchased this car in FL earlier this year, is that going to be a problem? (e.g. am I going to have to pay an excise tax or sales tax or something?)
d) I also never registered car in NY, so don't know the sequence. Insurance first then registration or registration first then insurance. When does inspection fall into the sequence?
Thank you in advance for any advice or suggestions!
I have copied a link that should answer many of your questions. NYS DMV - Vehicle Registration and Certificate of Title One thing I can tell you is that while many do it because of the cost of everything in NY should you ever get into an accident and have out of state plates and reg and yet live her, you can wind up in a heap of trouble. It happened to a friend and he was a 9 month resident here in NY, so change it quickly. They pulled his employment and that is how they found out.
nuts is right - but the car in FL that is never coming to NY can stay registered in FL. However, should that situation ever change you do need to change it. Aside from the obvious there are things like no-fault coverage (medical) that are different in FL and NY....NY's is pretty generous but only available to residents.
NY's DMV website is actually pretty user friendly believe it or not.

Thanks for the link!!! The website is very helpful. Looks like I'll have to pay the difference in sales tax in FL (6%) versus 8.625%, but that's okay. At least I now know to bring my sales contract to "prove" how much sales tax I paid in FL, so I can get the credit.
Thanks again!
