I am moving to Long Island and will be working in Brookhaven. I need to find somewhere to live. I have minimal knowledge of the area. Ideally, I would like to be within 30 minutes of work, but be in an area where there are bars and restaurants that I have the ability to walk to. Pretty, single girls would not be a bad thing either!
If it is relevant, I am looking for a furnished apartment.

The Town of Brookhaven or Brookhaven, NY 11719?
Budget?
My guess is if you're moving to Long Island to work in Brookhaven...are you going to be working at the Lab? Upton?
If so, there isn't too much right around that area, but there are areas within 30 minutes of there that could suit your needs.
Budget, of course, is going to be an issue, as well as if you'd rather be traveling with traffic or against traffic on your commute. You could look in areas such as Rocky Point, Mt. Sinai, Stony Brook, Smithtown (that one might be a little too far), Sayville (again might be at the edge of the 30 minute time).
If your budget is lower and you would rather be very close to work, you could look in Shirley or Mastic (not the greatest of areas, but they would be cheaper on the wallet and just a straight shot up William Floyd Pkwy to work).
Please let us know your budget so we can better assist you.
I will be working in Yaphank, NY, right off of the 495.
My budget will be ~$1,700/month. I will likely be looking at a 6 month lease.
Furnished apartment for 6 months? Is this a temp job?
1. You will not find a furnished apartment.
2. you will not find a lease for only 6 months.
You're options are extended stay hotels ~$100/day or looking for a room rental in someone's personal home.
if you want complete privacy, you might get lucky and find an off-season rental cottage that would let you rent month-to-month, but i doubt they are within your budget.
Patchogue has a nice little village with a great night life. Like beer? we have some award winning craft breweries right in town! (yes, i live here too)
I will be overseeing a project out there for 6 months. Why do say I will not find a furnished aparment or 6 month lease? Is that market driven or is there some law about short-term leases?
I really would prefer not to end up in an extended stay hotel.
