I remember there used to be chipmunks on the island... how come they are no longer here? When did they leave? Perhaps they did not like the taxes ?
I have chipmunks here, and rabbits... and apparently slugs (yuk!), making holes in the hostas.
Planning to get them (the slugs, not the chipmunks) drunk with beer this weekend and get rid of them.

A less humane way to get rid of them is to sprinkle salt on them
My front yard is loaded with chipmunks. They have set up a chipmunk 'condo' in my old wine barrel and frequently scurry back and forth across the street between my neighbor's and my feeders. Two days ago I was taking a package out of my car and one walked across the patio -- didn't run, didn't pick up speed -- within 4' of me. It actually slowed down and looked over at what I was doing. Probably was expecting a peanut.
I never see slugs or their trails where I live. I remember them being plentiful when I was kid. They were everywhere. I wonder if the type of soil plays a role. We tend to have more of a clay type of soil where my current home is whereas my parents have a sandier type of soil, although I don't seem to see them there either like I used to.
Saw my first chipmunk in Stony Brook over the weekend. I have a ton of slugs by me, the kids love to salt them.
