Hello All,

I am currently looking to possibly purchase a house in Dix Hills. We had the inspection done and they informed me that the natural gas burner is original to the house (at least 50 years old) and is past its life expectancy. I was told by the RE agent to look up estimates on how much it would cost to replace. Does anyone have some recommendations on who to call? Thank you for your help!

K

You'll need a plumber to install it - a good plumber would be able to help. Do you want a referral?

Does this help?

Fuel/energy source: Gas
System type: Boiler
Boiler manufacturer: Burnham
Heat distribution: Radiators
Approximate capacity: 95,000 BTU/hr
Efficiency: 1 Zone
Efficiency: Conventional
Approximate age: > 50 years
Typical life expectancy: Boiler (cast iron) 25 to 50 years
Main fuel shut off at: Exterior Meter
Exhaust pipe (vent connector): Single wall
Combustion air source: Interior of home

Steam or hot water radiators.

Regardless, it should be somewhere between $5K and $8K

I would say more like abou 5k at most. 95,000 BTU/hr seems extremly large for a single zone system. The op would be better served by putting in a milti zone system especially if he/she plans on finishing the basment or if the home is more than 1 story. That will run your cost more to 8k.

I did a 5 zone system about the same size just a little larger for 8k

My gas burner cost me 3k to replace. For a larger house I would say at most 5k. This was for an 80 percent efficient unit with 2 stage blower. I was told that the more efficient units actually die all the time. They are constantly repalcing the electronics boards in them. So the efficiency of the higher units does not equal how long they last.

I have 2 zones, plus a zone for the indirect hot water tank. mine was $6K in 2008. Mine was for oil, but costs are similar.

OP may not be able to retrofit more than 1 zone on a 2 story house depending on how it was plumbed to begin with.

I did a whole gas conversion (new boiler, hot water, relined chimney and ran gas into house from meter) I have 2 zones and it was $6500. I found out today that it could have been done cheaper but regardless, if you are just replacing the boiler it shouldn't be as much depending on the equipment. There's very high eff. units that are the size of a backpack with hot water on demand that cost more. A good plumber can do the job but cost vary by equipment as well. I'd say 80% around $3500 to $7k for 90% installed.
