My wife and I are looking at a home about 3 blocks north of sunrise right off of islip ave, house is beautiful but unsure of area. We are looking to have 3 or 4 children and would be sending them to catholic schools. Any info on area would be greatly appreciated.

Not a bad area at all. Our son lives on Pine st. and the neighborhood has always been kept up well. We've lived in Islip Terrace for over 30 years and that area of Islip has remained failry "steady" over the years. I don't have much info on St Mary's school but from what I understand it's very well rated.

If its west of route 111 in the Beaver Dam Park area that area is nice and well kept. If its west of Rt. 111 in those dead end streets I would be hesitant. Its not bad by no means, but its awful close to 111.

But Im more interested in why you plan on paying $10,000 k in taxes for Islip schools but sending them to private? There is nothing wrong with the schools...well except if little Johnny is a genius then his option are shallow within the district.

No disrepect to the school district but my wife and i went to catholic schools so we are partial to them. The house is on one of those dead end streets. why would you be hesitant because 111 is a major street or because 111 can be seedy? Thanks for the info

You can DM me if you want.

Location, location, location.

As you can see by the 7-11 dead end street I would be worried about maybe someday that all those side streets would become commercial areas...aka homes with law offices, dr offices, etc.. But that's just me. I see 3 nice houses for sale in the west side of 111, if its in your budget.

Other than that, I wouldn't have a issue about it.

I live just behind the dead end streets and have been here for 14 years the neighborhood is very good. My neighbor sent all her kids to St.Mary's then onto St.John (ones a Islip HS teacher, another works in accounting @ National Grid and last one is graduating this year). Good Luck.

It's more than likely that those streets will remain as they are just about forever. Since they closed Islip Speedway in 1984 and built factories and commercial buildings there the streets were made dead ends to insure that the only access to them was from Spur Drive. The idea was to keep commercial traffic off the residential streets.

You see, Freeman Ave used to be a through street all the way to Spur Dr. Well the same people who moved in and complained about the Speedway (which was there since 1947....) then complained about the commercial ttraffic on Freeman and other streets from the businesses that were built on the old speedway property. They were made dead ends sometime around 1990 or so.

I agree with tarag, nice neighborhood.

The block behind 7-11 is all commerical except for 1 house. Someone needs to let the truck drivers know Freeman doesn't go thru, nothing like having your cable lines riped from the house by an over sized truck

I live on the corner of sunrise and 111 in Islip, it's noisy but I can deal with it. I don't have kids but my neighbor does and said the SD is very good. My taxes are not $10,000 but I guess it depends where in Islip and the size of the house. My taxes are about $7200 but with star I pay about $6,500.I love where I live, been here 9 years. What street is the house you are looking to buy if you don't mind me asking. Islip has a nice downtown area with many places to eat, shop, grab a beer ect...BTW poppy's luncheonette is a great place for breakfast. Check out Dean's seafood in Islip, they have great fresh fish.
