I think this topic deserves its own thread.

How do you folks out there feel about Sachem schools?

Academics
Safety
Sports
Special Education
School Community

How do you rate these communities that are part of the Sachem school district:

Holbrook
Lake Groove
Ronkonkoma and/or Lake Ronkonkoma
Farmingville
Holtsville
North Patchogue

The best place to be is Lake Grove. It is still kind of off the beaten path, I know you're thinking MALL, but most of Lake Grove is residential while the other towns have alot of commercial and/or industrial areas. Plus they are split by the expressway.

So its a no go on Holtsville, Farmingville, and Ronkonkoma, but what about the newer developments in Holbrook?

Also, what about the schools? Has there been a big increase as of late in ESL and Bilingual classes?

Farmingville was spotty 10 years ago when I lived there. One street good, another filled with Juvies with nothing else to do but trespass on my property over and over and smash my windows. Nice, huh? The only time my neighbor spoke to us was to challenge my husband (who got too close to the neighbor's dog barking through the fence.) White trash row...I will never forget I was just pregnant with my son and these nasty kids kept hanging around looking to smash more of my windows.

Farmingville has that whole illegal alien problem. They used to hang out and hope to get picked up for work near 7-11. On the other hand, 'some racist' burned out a Hispanic family or 2 which is just not right.

I just can't recommend Farmingville to you. Brookhaven--Crookhaven....a few nice streets and the rest full of 'weirdos.'

Why are homes so affordable in Holbrook? What's the deal?

Is it the close proximity to McArthur, the schools, the illegals in Farmingville? What is it?

All of the above.
Holbrooks OK now but your long term prospects are questionable.

If you must move there ...go Lake Grove.
Its an incorporated village and quasi North Shore by the mall.

As I posted on the other thread that if I leave NB I'll be looking into the following areas: Dix Hills, Kings Park, West Islip, and East Islip.

Although, I'm curious about Holbrook. Some of the neighborhoods seem ok, but they all lack life and character. Also, the neighborhoods seem far away from convenient shopping. Patchogue-Holbrook road is sterile.

I know people that live there and they love it.

I went to the Holtsville Zoo the other day and came away with mixed feelings. On one hand the ecology center is a real cool thing, but the upkeep of the park grounds is sub-standard. Also, if the visitors are any indication of what the residents around are like then I would just as well avoid the area.
