As it often appears that the most significant employers on the island are public sector/government jobs do you really want to pressure them to give you another tax increase?
No, I am saying that private sector employers need to pay their employees more. Public sector / government jobs already pay too much when you take into account the benefits that they get and the fact that they have job security.

Still less. I have never had a mortgage & taxes add up to anythin near $3300 and i have not only owned co-ops. I am talking about houses.
sure you have.
But even assuming that were true, where did the down payment come from for all these houses you've owned over the years? Because surely you in all your wisdom know that in order to make an accurate comparison between the costs of owning vs. renting you sort of need to include that big check most people write when they first move in.
Hopefully I am not duplicating any responses. The reason for the lack of affordable housing on LI appears to be the squeezing out of the middle class. Middle class on LI suffer the most. We pay our mortgage, bills, PROPERTY TAXES(biggest burden) and there isn't much left over. Higher property tax drives up the rent prices, and most young people rent. What is left? An upper class that does not rebel against high taxes a lower income population that is subsidized. Your income, 60,000 to 70,000 is just at the point where you will struggle. There is no answer because there are no politicians that put the community first and their jobs(reelection second). Your salary is better served at another location. Sorry to be so cynical, but owning a home on LI can do that to you.

That is the problem. We need a strong middle class, but neither party advocates for the middle class. What we need is a 3rd party that actually cares about the middle class, but out electoral system makes it very difficult for 3rd parties to succeed. The alternative is social unrest, and I doubt anyone wants to see that.
Why is there no affordable housing on LI? Because the feds will sue you if you try to create any.
